recently diodnosed with stage 11 bowel cancer no spread. After shielding for 2 weeks went for op in private hospital, surgeon because of my previous operation (nothing to do with cancer) decided he did not want to do it in that hospital, wanted to do it where he works with his team. They come up with another option Radiotheraphy and chemo tablets, had to wait another 5 weeks. I am an anxious mess. Is this normal. I know that it might not work and I will have to have surgery. Sorry had to go in private hospital due to Covid. Has anyone got rid of tumour by radiotheraphy. Will I calm down when treatment starts. I feel like I can’t get on with life. Thank you Nelly 1955

    • Hi Nelly I had oxaliplatin on day one through iv in hospital as outpatient, then capecitapine tablets for 21 days at home then 7 day break repeated four times, then 5weeks radio and capecitapine together as inpatient monday to Friday as had to travel 100 miles round trip each day, my oncologist recommended I stayed in beatson which is cancer hospital in Glasgow, yes was put on diazepam for anxiety and its normal to be more anxious as this is your start of treatment, but I'm sure as the time goes on you'll cope better as u know wat to expect, just keep reminding yourself you and your teams goal is for cure, try not over think is my best tip and dont google things thats where I went wrong set my anxiety into over drive, I hope u manage a settled night and good luck for tomorrow, joe x
  • Hi Joe thank you for replying, I too have googled and yes always believe dr. Google. I look at all reviews that where addiction to diazepam came from. I’m dreading taking the chemo tablets before I toddle of for radiotheraphy. I feel for you having to travel so far, I only live about 30 mins from my hospital: hope you are recovering well, I know it was would be risky but I wish I’d oped for the op. Did your anxiety calm down when you got into the routine. I’ve got 28 days no weekends.  My family are finding hard, did the diazepam help with any of treatments, don’t answer that question if you don’t want too. Well here’s to tomorrow I’ll start again take care and thank fr your replys

Hi nelly hope your first day treatment went well :) it sounds to me as your diagnosis is curable and I'm sure you'll manage through this, it'll be hard at times I totally understand as I was a anxious mess and there was no covid about then, so can only imagine how u feel just now, diazepam is not the answer long term tho as I found out, my doctor and I have agreed to tapering me off them soon, as I'm now recovering, I wasn't in the right frame of mind to do it when going through intensive treatment and that added stress on top wouldn't have been good, that's how I ended up getting dose increased every couple of month as your body doesn't get the same effect, that was my experience with them, I hope as time goes on your anxiety will calm, take care joe

  • Hi Joe, so happy you are recovering. How is your anxiety now? My cancer got diagnosed from bowel test. I did have a poo test a few months before because I thought there was blood but came back negative. Then there was no more symptoms.  I’ve been taking the diazepam as prescribed for 4 days, I couldn’t cope anymore, I was so glad you replied and said you was an anxious mess, that’s been me too. I took 2mg now and again when it went through the roof. At the moment I have zero motivation, have you got back to your life.? I am going. To see one of their mental health dr. I want to try meditation and breathing, but sometimes to wired. It just crept up on me. I dreading these chemo pills.love and kindness to us all. Thank you for replying I so very much appreciated it.
