Hi all, hoping I can get some advice here. My dad has stage 4 bowel cancer which has spread to his liver. Only diagnosed 7 weeks ago and sadly there is no treatment available for him. He has been leaking from his back passage during the night and so the bed has to be changed a number of times. Just wondering if anyone could recommend incontinence pads or something similar that might help him regain some dignity and save my mum having to do so much washing. Thanks
Hi . I’m so sorry to hear about your dad and I can imagine how distressing this must be for him.
Is it a lot of leakage? There are incontinence pads to be found online but I think they can be quite expensive so I was wondering if something like a women’s sanitary pad placed towards the back of his underwear would be sufficient?
There are also small incontinence sheets available which I think are similar to puppy training pads. These could be placed on top of the sheet under your dad or also possibly wrapped around him inside his underwear for extra protection and can be found in places like Poundland and the like.
Lastly I’m not sure how old your dad is but all cancer patients are entitled to free prescriptions (if he doesn’t qualify already) so maybe see if his doctor or practice nurse could prescribe some pads?
Has he had a Colorectal support nurse allocated who may be able to offer advice? Or you could ring the Macmillan Support Team on

My mother in law found herself in a similar situation to your mum and it was exhausting for her so please investigate any help that might be available through the social services as well
Take care

Hi robby 1908
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I think you need to speak to your dad's GP and ask for an urgent referral to the Bowel and Bladder Service, and to the palliative care team. I know it is often difficult to get someone to accept this sort of intervention but it really does help.
My husband has medical conditions, including incontinence, and pad were provided for him at first but now her has pull up pants.
If there is a need, and it sounds very much like your dad will meet this criteria, your dad should be prescribed pads or pants on the NHS, as these can be quite expensive.
I also found that it is much cheaper to buy puppy pads, which are the same as as disposable incontinence bed pads and just as good - but make sure you get the bigger ones.
I then found out about, and also bought, washable draw sheets with tucks from Amazon - which were very good as the moisture passed through them keeping my husband and the bed dry. The advantage of these is that they tuck in they didn't move about or crease up and they do save a lot of sheet washing. I bought four and found I could manage with these.
It is very hard , and can be so stressful, for anyone to have these problems and I remember how my husband was at first, but he is now quite happy wearing his pull up pants.
I hope you can find a helpful solution for your dad and mum.
Take care,
VickiLynne
Hi,
I cared for my Dad until he passed away in March, Dad was not incontinent but had mobility issues and sometimes did not make it to the bathroom in time and we had a few accidents which distressed him enormously. We used the Tena pull up pants for him which preserved his dignity and made him feel much more secure. Any accidents could be dealt with discretely.
As Dad's problems were just age related, we did not get these on prescription for him but I am sure you would be entitled to these on prescription for your Dad.
Dad was also catheterised which sometimes used to leak in the night if he laid on the tube. We used the large puppy pads under the sheets which saved the mattress and topper. As VickiLynne says these are cheaper than the human version.
Take care xx
I’m so sorry your dad passed away recently. Sending love to you.
Thank you so much for replying. My dad also has poor mobility so this may be a good solution for him.

Hi
Sorry to hear that your family are having to go through this it must be so hard for you all. Try getting in touch with your GP in ghe first instance who could refer you to theincontinence nurse as I am sure they dont just deal with urine incontinence. Your GP could also refer you to a district nurse as your dads skin is at risk of breaking down due to being incontinent. They may be able to provide pads also and barrier creams to protect his skin.

Thank you for replying. Will contact GP tomorrow and that will hopefully get something organised. I think because this has all happened during lockdown he has only ever had two telephone conversations with the consultant. No one has come to the house so we don’t really know what is available to help make him more comfortable. I really appreciate all the advice and help given from everyone here x
