Hi all,
I just wondered if anyone had a similar experience with capecitabine tablets? I've been getting an aching down my neck and chest ache so I was told to stop taking them and had tests on my heart. I was told all was fine, but now the oncologist wants a face to face appointment. Do you know what would happen next? I'm extremely anxious for the first time since my diagnosis.
Thanks so much!
Hi,
Quite a lot of patients do experience similar events with this . They do like to touch base and reevaluate. The oncologists have quite a few options . They do a risk/ benefits analysis but they can also reduce doses or switch chemo . I am sorry it has caused you increased anxiety but it does happen and they will be very experienced at handling situations like yours . They will continue to be there for you and seek the best option for your care .

Hi Court,
Thank you so much for your reply. It's reassuring. I suppose I don't know a lot yet. Had my diagnosis of a tumour in my colon in April and this was removed. I had 4 out of 54 lymph nodes with cancer cells and so I am keen to still have treatment. This was only my first cycle so the unknown really scares me. I have been strong and positive throughout the diagnosis, operation and prospect of chemo, but when the plan is not set I feel out of control. I guess this is normal. Thank you so much again for responding it really helps. I'm new to the community.
Hope all is going well for you too.
That’s totally understandable and you have done so well . My mum is the patient and had two years worth of chemotherapy and many bumps along the way with a few emergency admissions. It was quite frightening at the time but they had the skills and experience behind them and got her over every bump . We were frightened they would stop chemo but they adjusted it instead and it did the trick .
They will help you through this .

I hope your mum is doing well. So glad to hear they adjusted the treatment and kept going. Can I ask if the symptoms were cardiac related? Hope you don't mind. Anyway you've made me feel calmer and back to my positive self. I will try to keep it up!
Hi ,
Ask anything you like . Hers were different , abdominal pains , then she was unable to walk and became very confused ! They worked through it all and just reducing it by 20% made the whole thing manageable After a hospital admission to balance everything out . A lot of people here have reported issues with the cap tablets and heart issues . It comes up quite a bit to be honest but the Nice guidelines do recommend a different chemo for those that can’t use it . So they are aware and have a back up plan if they are concerned about it . For me the fear is generated by not knowing, once the Doctors explained it all and the various ways to overcome , change or alter them really helped . Some people sail through chemo , others tolerate one chemo over another and others tolerate it better at a smaller dose . If they feel the risks are too great they terminate it . They will talk it all through with you but you can check the NICE guidelines as they cover this . I can’t remember the name of the chemo they replace it with if they feel it’s too much , off the top of my head .
They will also listen to your concerns too . Glad you got your heart checked out .
Mum is doing fine thanks . With the help of the team she has made it through various chemos , surgeries and continues to live a good life . We have a debt to the NHS we could never repay .

That must have been a scary time. It's reassuring to know how well they looked after her. Thank you for the advice I will look up the NICE guidelines. I'm feeling a little better since I spoke to my nurse yesterday too and have my next appointment booked. Have a good day!
