Calcium and magnesium

Hi everyone,
My dad has been low in magnesium for a few weeks now and has had 3 hour infusions prior to treatment on a few occasions. Today after reviewing his bloods, they have said both his calcium and magnesium levels are still quite low and they would like to do a 10 hour infusion overnight. They have told him this is nothing to worry about and could top him up for a few weeks.
Has anyone had any experience of this? Is it common?

Thanks in advance Relaxed

  • Hi ,

Sorry to hear about your dad but chemo can be hard on all other aspects of the body . For my mum it was her potassium level that they had to treat . She stayed in overnight and got some IV fluid too and it did a great job . It wobbled about for a wee while after chemo but they kept a close eye on it and it eventually settled . The second year my mum had chemo they actually kept her in overnight and she had a really slow administration. I think picked her up straight after the school run . It was actually so much easier on her . She just dosed o and off then had a good sleep the following afternoon.
I certainly don’t think there is anything to be unduly concerned about .

    Send him our best ,

    Take care ,

  • Hi . I had low magnesium while in hospital after my reversal and was put on a drip and given a vile drink to have! My doctor later noticed that my calcium was low and put me on a high dose of vitamin d for a couple of weeks and recommended that I take it from October to April on a daily basis. It could be worth trying with your dad but make sure that you check with the chemo nurses first?
