Hi All,

My Farther has just had is Bowel Cancer surgery cancelled (1 week before he was due to be operated on) due to the impact of COVID-19 and I'm wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences and if there are any options still available for this Surgery to take place?  We are prepared to travel to any location.

The NHS inform us that they are not able to advise when they will be next available to perform the Surgery and all the Private options also inform us they are not currently performing any surgeries either.

Strangely enough their does seem to be conflicting reports in the Media that the Government has written to the NHS saying that Cancer surgeries must continue however, it does not seem to be the case for my Farther (Derby Royal)

Kind Regards,

Tim

  • Hi ,

Sadly we have heard that a lot this week . I did read that another patients surgeon had advised all gastric surgeries are cancelled for two weeks in England  . The issue is securing a high dependency bed . They won’t proceed without that at the best of times and the whole Corona virus situation has compounded it . Then they assess the risk of corona virus between the surgeon and patient .
The private sector aspect is happening in part as I know our local private hospital is now used for breast cancer patients .But again only in part as patients that they deem suitable to wait are being classed as safer to do so . So it seems most operations are being put through the same process .

There is new surgical guidelines out . Three priorities. Not useful to you or your dad just now but might be handy to have when it starts to open up again . I will look them out in the morning for you . In Scotland some surgery is still carried out but certainly interrupted as well in the larger cities . It seems to be assessed on which is the greater risk to the patient .

Still can’t quite get my head around the current situation and it’s so distressing to see patients going through this when it’s already hard dealing with the cancer diagnosis.
Send your dad our very best wishes and we are all hoping for that line to flatten very , very soon .

    Take care ,

  • Yes Karen it’s been a nightmare to deal with them I phoned my nurse yesterday and was told it could be June July before my op

I emailed my consultant last night yet to hear anything back as yet I’m worried sick my last treatment was 25 October last year my op was due the 25 March

so to summarise going forward I’ve got no idea and no source of getting any idea at all when surgery will take place I was told my cancer could be cured with APR surgery but as this drags on I’m loosing hope like we are being forgotten about take care xx

  • Hi Everybody

I have already had my surgery but all my chemotherapy has been stopped I was absolutely devastated and feel like I've been abandoned when at the beginning it was really important to have the treatment. So am now worried   I think it's a national outrage as there are claims that cancer patients are still being looked after. But it's clearly not the case all my support networks have gone. All we can do is support each other in these so very hard times. Life was hard enough before this , I pray for all of you that are awaiting operations

    Lots of love

  • I feel much the same got support being told nothing like I said it could be two months before I get my op that will be almost 8 months after treatment

Yes, indeed it was Derby Royal for my Farther new and they are offering no future dates or alternatives.

Our fear is now that a tumor that has not spread, will have spread to other organs by the time they are prepared to operate once more

  • Yes that’s my concern I’ve had radiochemo with a good response I did get scaned again on the 30thmarch and all was the same I was t3n1m0 so no spread and all contained in the bowel but god knows now if I’m to wait till July take care Andy

I know that it is not much comfort but I have been told that bowel tumours are usually very slow growing and that waiting weeks/ a few months does not usually make any difference as they take years to develop..

  • Hi Nicky my last treatment was nearly 5 and half moths ago

  • Hi monzaman, I was in a similar position to you. All my treatment, radiotherapy and chemo, finished in June of last year. I expected to have my op by October. Unfortunately there were complications and I was referred to Southampton. In the end I finally had my op in January of this year. Like you I was concerned about the delay but the fact that I had had 4 cycles of IV chemo followed up with 5.5 weeks of radiotherapy and chemo the delay didn't impact on my tumour.

It's a really worrying time and I hope everyone can get the treatment and surgery they require as soon as possible. I'm due to have a stoma reversal which should have happened sometime in May but of course that's not happening either. I was keen to have it done before June as my daughter was due over from Australia with her new husband to celebrate their wedding. Obviously this isn't happening either. So all in all, I'm happy to keep "Bubble" until such time as it's safe to have the op. I'd rather wait than risk going into hospital at the moment.

I really hope you get some info soon and that it puts your mind to rest a little.

    Stay safe.

    Rita
