Hi everyone, hope your’e all safe and coping with this lock down.

Just had a phone call from my consultant cancelling my operation scheduled for 28th April. She said that they’ve found people having Bowel ops are more prone to catching Covid 19 and dying from it. She did say that the higher ups at the hospital are trying to sort things out so that ops like mine can be carried out at private hospitals, which are currently virus free.

Although I fully understand their reasoning and she did say that she is confident that the delay won’t change my prognosis, i’m still feeling very annoyed and angry.

  • Hi Mark ,

The whole thing is just rotten . I know our breast care has just been housed in a private facility . But limited to priority cases . It is up and running now so that’s maybe the plan for your area too.

I know Italy have shared a lot of information on what they have experienced and that’s helped shape a lot of what is going on just now but I have not heard that about bowel operations .

It is such a shame they have not been able to give you an alternative yet and a time scale for it . That would have at least given  you an aim . The only good thing you do seem a top priority for getting surgery according to the new priority list . Anyway I know words are really cheap in this pandemic and I sincerely wish it were not so for you . The whole thing is stressful enough without this nightmare on top of it . But we want you well and safe too .

Hoping you hear something very soon and hope they get that unit up and running . They have even built walls in hospital here to protect people . It’s a mess . Such a mess so you have every right to vent your anger .

    Kind regards ,

Thanks for the reply Court, it’s really appreciated

I feel really guilty at being angry as I know that it’s not my consultants fault. I think that I would have taken things better if she could have given me another date, but she said that was’nt possible as things are changing on a daily basis. Fingers crossed they can sort something out with the private sector and/or this lockdown and social distancing start to work. It’s just so very anoying that other illnesses seem to have been neglected.

Anyways, hope everyone stays safe and relatively healthy in these strange times

    Mark.

  • It is devastating to see what has happened to the entire health care system as we knew it . The whole thing is such a tragedy .
I honestly don’t think there is anything to feel guilty about . In any other year you would be a health priority and it’s very hard to adjust to the speed of change that’s going on . The pandemic is a nightmare in itself so it’s entirely reasonable to feel swept aside .

Saying that I do think a lot of background plans and negotiations are going on . My mum’s friend died at 63 from the virus with no other health issues so taking it away from general hospitals seems a good fit . My friends dad had emergency surgery last weekend and it was in a stand alone unit and he was singing it’s praises so really hoping it won’t be long till they get these arrangements firmed up and functioning . They have all the equipment and some friends have already been redeployed. So I am remaining hopeful this is in the pipeline for you .
    take care ,

Hi Mark, i understand how you feel, my opp was due on the 31st March, i got a call on the 30th saying it had been cancelled due to the surgeon being ill, i had a call from nurses yesterday to see how i was doing, at the mo i am doing ok, i asked about the surgeon he is now back at work, and i also asked if there was any news about another opp date, but as things are now with the virus, they cant say, so its a waiting game for us all, hopefully we wont be long before things are back to normal, Take care x

  • Evening Mark,

Can't imagine how you feel, I remember counting the days to surgery because it meant something was getting done.  My wife is a Dr and if it's any use assures me  bowel cancer is very slow growing, mine was missed by two Dr's before being diagnosed 6 months later; it didn't make any difference.  Wish I could say or do something to make it easier, if you want to chat/rant/sound off/ or talk footy email me.

Hi everyone, hope your all keeping yourself safe from this crappy virus and coping with lockdown.

just a quick update, I got a phone call from the hospital today and my colonoscopy to remove 3 non cancerous polyps, that was originally planned for the beginning of this month, will now go ahead next week, ironically on the 28th, which was the original date for my OP.

Hopefully this means that the proverbial ball has started rolling again, as my Surgeon wanted the non cancerous Polyps dealt with before the op to remove the cancerous part of my bowel.

Not thrilled to be going to the main hospital for this due to Covid, but it is what it is and it’s another step forward in beating Cancer.
