Hello,

I have an extended family member who was diagnosed with bowel cancer two years ago. She had surgery to remove the tumour and has been cancer free since then as far as we know. She had chemotherapy tablets amongst other medication and at the beginning of this year had her stoma removed and is getting used to going to the toilet again. She is 69 years old and although very fit, I am worried she should be self isolating. I upset her by suggesting this as she feels because she is cancer free and not 70, she doesn't fall into the vulnerable category. I'm looking for some advice as the government guidelines aren't clear for people like her. I imagine the hospital staff have been in touch with her by now but I don't trust her to tell me the truth. I am just concerned that she may be more prone to infection. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi ,

I totally understand where you are coming from and it is a situation that is making us have conversations with relatives that are stark and to a degree upsetting .

My mum has not had any official notification yet but that may be on its way . She is a stage 4 patient over 70 but not had any treatment for four years . The government initially classed anyone who is called for the flu jag to be in that group to self isolate . I spoke to my parents about it from a few angles . I suggested they follow the very vulnerable group . Firstly for their own health and well being but secondly if they catch it and become ill they may need the NHS when it’s over burdened needs everyone to play their part in prevention . That had some impact but what really hit home was they would be on their own in there .My husband has just reinforced this with his own parents and they are now seeing the sense in it .

I know the last thing you want to do is take away the work she has done in her recovery . The way I got round that is to say let’s review this every few weeks and see how the virus is impacting the UK and hospitals. I think the thought of twelve weeks initially was overwhelming. They have actually adjusted really well .

You could always phone our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 . And see if they can offer guidance . My neighbour is 70 in a few months so is just adopting the guidelines as though she was . She is youthful and active but wants to keep it that way .

Great you care by the way !

    take care ,
