I have rectal cancer. I finished the chemotherapy and radiotherapy on the 20.12.2019. Surgery is scheduled for the 7th February 2020. I have had lots of blood tests done since the cancer was discovered.
Both the oncologist and the surgeon have told me that my Body would recover from the treatment and it would take about 4 to six weeks.
Whilst i am feeling pretty good, nearly back to eating normally, the blood tests seem to be going in the opposite direction. Whilst the results are sent back to the surgeon and he has not contacted me, i thought they should be showing an improvement after 5 weeks.
Prior to the discovery of the cancer the tests showed as follows on the 11.09.2019.
Red Hemeties White Lymphocytes
498,000 2516 11.09.2019
396,000 249 19.12.2019
386,000 416 27.12.2019
398,000 686 03.01.2020
413,000 563 20.01.2020
384,000 499 29.01.2020
I had hoped as my surgery approaches that the numbers would have risen. I am concerned, are these numbers normal. ?
Hi ,
I think our blood readings are possibly using different units .
It took my mum’s bloods longer than five weeks to balance out . One liver enzyme never did and her platelets have stayed very low since her liver resection. However the anaesthetist was happy with them for her lung surgery . They were all reviewed prior to surgery . Do you get to meet the surgeon or anaesthetist prior to the surgery . Give you a chance to get some reassurance.
Hope it all goes well ,

Thank you for responding. I have had the appointment with the anesthetist and I am not expecting any further meetings, however the anesthetist has asked for a blood test the day before surgery and to bring it with on the day of the surgery, I guess that is the time to talk to him. I will take your advice and send an email to the surgeon about the test results.
That’s great that they will review your bloods anyway . The way it was put to us they operate on people all the time and whilst your bloods might be off for your healthy norm they may actually be seeing a lot worse but it’s still within acceptable limits .
Sounds a thorough team you have there . Hope it all goes smoothly for you .
take care ,
