Hi guys

I am currently receiving chemotherapy for bowel cancer cells in some veins after successful surgery in July 2019. I am currently halfway through my 30 weekly doses which has been reduced twice due to side effects. I am currently on a low residue low fibre diet for constant constipation which has now eased due to the diet but I am struggling with bloatedness stomach cramps and gurgling and rumbling stomach noises. I take buscopan for the cramps and a single daily tablet of lansoprozole for the gases but unfortunately this is not working and with a loss of appetite due to the stomach issues I am losing weight every week. Any advice on the side effects would be greatly appreciated as I'm getting to the end of my tether and struggling with the side effects. Plus I've now been diagnosed with IBS which would go some way to explaining the symptoms but due to chemo I get double trouble.

Regards Mark

  • Hi Mark Sorry to hear that you’re struggling and now having IBS thrown into the mix won’t be helping. I’m afraid I’ve no magic answers - in fact I lay in bed last night wondering how on earth my husband was managing to sleep through the noises my stomach was making! I find my windy issues seem to start at a teatime after my post-work cup of tea but it’s a tough one to give up.

Ive attached a link to the Bowel Cancer Cancer uk booklet on eating well as it covers wind, constipation and weight gain so hopefully there might be a couple of tips in there?

Anyway it’s good to hear that you’re halfway through and, if the next few months go as quickly as January has, then you’ll soon be done.

    Take care

  • Hi we have 'spoken' in the past. Cannot help with the weight loss, as I ended up with weight gain on the same regime, to my annoyance. But I wish you well in your endeavors. Keep in there if you can, else don't beat yourself up if you cannot. I struggled, taking each week at a time, but finally got there, and very recent CT and colonoscopy (today!) results give the all clear! I so wish the same for you.
