Hi I've been back the doctors today

and he's put me on the two week wait because my FOB was positive and a change of bowel habits I'm really scared now that it could be cancer

he's referred me to 14 day urgent referral to colerectal and I've booked in private Thursday at 8pm to see a gastro consultant my head is spinning and feel very anxious

  • Hi and welcome to the board. You will find that the waiting for appointments, results, scan etc. is very stressful and it’s easy for your imagination to run away with you. Please stay away from Google - it’s full of misleading information, out of date facts and you will scare yourself silly. At the moment you don’t know what you’re dealing with (if anything) so try and keep yourself busy until you have all the facts.

Your Doctor sounds to have been on the ball and the 14 day urgent referral is the ‘gold standard treatment’ for anyone over 50 that meets 2 or more of the criteria on their ticklist. The consultant may send you for more tests which is again standard treatment to allow them to see the full picture and decide what is causing your symptons.

Please let us know how you get on and we’ll be happy to help you any way we can

    Take care

    Hi Karen

Thank you so much my story is I’ve been having right sided pain intermittent all bloods and ultrasound Normal, but I was passing December what I describe as little black flakes no blood etc the three fit tests I did were negative, however the two I did last week I think I may have done the test wrong because the leaflet said only to take three samples i took six silly me, and it showed a faint pink positive line it’s bizarre how three were negative and the last two were positive the are the FIT Test FOB self check so I don’t know if it’s given a false positive reading? So I’ve ordered another two tonight to make sure my GP doesn’t know what theses black grit/flakes are he said he’s never come across them he said if it’s blood u see blood or black tarry stools which I’ve never had, however I do have loose bowels now and then but my mum and sister both have Chrohns and my uncle had colitis but my bloods are clear my head is spinning with it all

Sorry I’m 45 my ultrasound I had last week was clear

my bloods are clear just passing theses black flakes/grit which the doctor as no idea what it is my stools aren’t red or Mooron or black tarry just thease little black specks flakes

  • Hi . It sounds curious doesn’t it. I remember my sister doing one of these over the counter tests and getting a positive reading but she was fine when they did a colonoscopy - all they found were a couple of tiny tapeworms.

Have you dissected your diet? It’s not something daft like kiwi fruit seeds? Could be worth keeping a food diary for a couple of weeks to see if there’s anything that makes the symptons worse? Unfortunately stress can cause loose bowels too.

I see that you’ve posted on the Bowel Cancer uk Board too and someone suggested maybe seeing your doctor to see if they can prescribe something just to help calm you over the next couple of weeks which might be worth considering.

Hope your appointment comes through quickly

    Take care

  • Dear Newbie27

Firstly welcome, although it's so.ewhere none of us really wish we were.  You were right to come here for information, try to avoid Google - there's alot of weird and far from wonderful stuff on there.

Unfortunately the waiting is not yet over, the days may seem interminable but they will pass.  If the outcome is all you wish, great, if not I'm sure you'll find the realities of treatment far easier than you fear.  I'm definitely at the 'wimp end' of any pain scale and found it all very manageable.  Just out of interest why go private?  You will be on a two week referral with the NHS - and I feel my treatment after diagnosis was superb - even if the Liverpool Royal was, and still is, literally falling apart.

Hope all goes as well as possible

  • I meant to include but forgot, senior moment, the advice to go to your GP was excellent.  Also, consider sleeping tablets - I'd never taken them before, or since, and only took them roughlt 1:4 nights between diagnosis and treatment but they meant I did get sleep on those nights; a valuable commodity.

  • Hi . I can’t help with the blood test results but why not give the nurses on here a ring on 0808 808 0000? Hopefully they will be able to advise you? x
