Hi all, I had a large polyp removed on Wednesday from my bowel and am recovering at home now. It was found under the bowel screening program.  I feel a bit sore and my bowel is playing up a bit which I hope will settle down with time. I am now awaiting the histopathology report for the results which I am hoping is going to be good news. My consultant seems confident its benign but I'm still worrying about it.

Has anyone else experienced this please?

  • Hello Dotwin

Well done for attending your bowel cancer screening. Apparently lots of people don't go. I also had routine bowel cancer screening in the summer as I'm 55. My bowel cancer screening was clear but a routine cervical screening was abnormal for the first time ever! When I had a colposcopy they found a polyp which was sent for histology. It turned out to be completely benign which was a relief. Whilst this all caused me lots of stress I was reminded by the nurse on MacMillan's helpline that screening aims to pick up abnormalities before they have a chance to turn into something more sinister/catch cancer in its early stages before it can spread. I am not medically trained but hope this helps. Waiting for results and the uncertainty is hard to cope with.  I find a walk in the fresh air helps.

    Hope this is useful

  • Hi Dotwin,

I’m 47 and had my first colonoscopy yesterday. They found 3 polyps, 2 removed successfully, the other failed and they also found some ulcers. All 4 have been sent for biopsy. I am nervous waiting for the results too but am trying to stay positive.

can I ask how you felt the day after your colonoscopy? I’m very tired today as I had sedation but I feel like a burning sensation in my tummy and have an ache at the site of the one they weren’t able to remove. Is this normal?

    Dear A,

Sorry for late response to your post.

Thank you for your reply. I was very worried at the time but my histology report was benign which was such a relief. I have another check up in March and then will be seen probably on a yearly basis in case they come back.

I would advise anyone to have the screening done, because i had no symptoms and was glad i went and it was found early :-)

    Best wishes

    Dear Shellyann,

First of all, well done for having a Colonoscopy.

Mine was not a very pleasant experience if I'm honest but each person is different.  I went for a Sigmoidoscopy under the Bowel Screening programme and they found a large polyp. I then had to have a full Colonoscopy to check the rest of my large bowel to see if there were any more which fortunately there wasn't then i was scheduled at a later date to have an EMR procedure to remove the polyp.

I did not have pain relief or sedation for the Colonoscopy when i had it done which was my choice and i had a little bit of discomfort, nothing too bad, which my doctor told me was because he was turning the corner to check.

They have to put air into your bowel when they do these procedures so that is probably why you have a bit of discomfort. You may find comfort in drinking some peppermint tea or cordial which tends to help.

I hope this helps you hun :-)
