Tiredness post treatment

Morning all I wanted to ask a question about tiredness post treatment.

Since the end of my treatment I’ve been struggling quite a lot with feeling of tiredness. Just a recap I had 5 weeks of chemo radiotherapy (Aug to Sept) then 3 treatments of Papillon over 6 weeks - this finished c5 weeks ago.

Prior to diagnosis I was fairly fit (40yo) doing 70 mile bike rides and felt great, since treatment ended I hoped I’d get somewhere back to normal but I feel quite lethargic. I facilitated a 2 day workshop the last 2 days and feel totally shattered today.

Now I appreciate the radio is still (hopefully) working its magic but I was just wondering how long it took people to feel like their energy levels had recovered post treatment. I feel like a zombie at some moments. :(

Thanks

Rich

  • Hi rich I’m 5 weeks post radio/chemo I managed to work through out but even now I feel absolutely run down I’m a painter and decorator on new build sites so it is a physical job but like I said I’m really lacking energy

    all the best Andy

  • Hi my husband finished his 5 weekschemo radiotherapy in June he only said to me yesterday, "I am always tired these days" at the beginning i.e. End of treatment he needed to go to bed every day and sleep and slept in deep sleep too....that lessened as time went on and he regained stamina and got back to gym etc....but he still says he is not back to full energy levels on some days.

Hi Andy, wow mate you’re a hero for working through it! No wonder you’re tired? My job is a desk job albeit with a fair bit of travel so you’ve put things into perspective for me? Hope you pick up soon mate, are you booked in for your results yet?

  • Hi I Had my chemoradiation in May and finished in June I took one extra week off then went back to work I have quite a physical job and I have to say it was quite tiring  . It was on going all throughout the summer I'm afraid to say so I think this is normal what your feeling . I also managed to keep up my swimming although not quite as far as usual this usually made me feel better for a while.  When I saw my surgeon in September he put my op off till middle of October to give it a chance for shrinkage as I didn't have any . He said the chemoradiation was still working then so it takes a time to get out of the system

good luck hope you perk up soon

  • Hi, my regime was totally different being 30 weekly doses, but the tiredness still kicked in. One consultant likened each chemo session to a minor operation, which I agree with, with hindsight. I have therefore decided to treat the whole 30 week chemo cycle ( which will end on the 11th!!!!) as a major operation, like the resection, and phase my re-fitness accordingly. Yes I have tried to work throughout but lately with limited success, so I know there is someway to go to recover.

    Hope this may help someone.

  • Hi rich I’m booked in for scans on the 10th of this month get results on the 13th which is next Friday my youngest sons 18th .hoping it’s done the job mate I’ve had no symptoms at all now for the last 6 weeks or so , so fingers crossed

my tumour is localised with no spread at the original scans so hoping it’s stayed that way and the radio as zapped the burger

    all the best rich

thanks for this, sounds like what I’m feeling is fairly normal then? I’m feeling better thanks did a lot over the weekend and not feeling too bad, I think I’m getting better but it can be cumulative.

    Hey Gemmary,

Thanks for your reply. Great idea to change your mindset to deal with the treatment better. How we manage this mentally is so important isn’t it?

good luck with your final treatment on Weds Slight smile

Ah yes sorry you did tell me that! Hope the scans go well tomorrow mate will be thinking of you!

I spoke to my Oncologists PA today and she said my results will probably be in January? After the scans my Oncologist wants to review them with my surgeon and there aren’t any of these meetings planned over the Xmas period.

Our prognosis sounds very similar so hope we both get the results we hope for!!! fingers crossed mate
