feeling very apprehensive about how best to support my 69 year old husband 5eough the coming months. He has been diagnosed with a s grade 2 adenocarcinoma very low down close to the rectum. We’ve been told this is too difficult to remove and will mean a big operation to remove his lower bowel and rectum after a spell of chemo radiation. This will result in a permanent stoma.
He is due to have his regime explained this week and also meet with radiotherapy staff for scan, tattoos and appointments (28days Mon to Friday)
Naturally, we don’t really know what to expect and this all seems overwhelming and very frightening but, after reading some of the success accounts here, I’m feeling slightly more encouraged that he can get through this. Taking the advice to take a step at a time has also helped me to breathe but I’d be glad to know what to expect from someone who’s either been through this themselves or, like me, found themselves in the main support role
Hi and welcome to the board. I think your daughter may also have posted asking for advice? Ewok has had ELAPE and suggested she messages direct and I’m sure will be happy to do the same for you. If you click on the name it will take you to Ewoks profile page then you can Add a Friend and send private messages.
It is overwhelming but concentrate on getting the chemoradiotherapy out of the way then focus on the operation etc. Have you been allocated a colorectal support nurse? Mine discussed hospital transport with me which may be an option for you? It is volunteers who take and collect people for appointments. The downside is that you may be collected a couple of hours before your appointment and have to wait a while afterwards to be picked up.
Im sure court will be along shortly who has supported her mum through treatment and always gives great advice.
Please stay away from google - stay on here and ask anything you want and we’ll be happy to support you through this.
Take care
Karen x
