hello everyone, so as expected mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer yesterday, we don't know what stage it is yet as she has been told she needs a PET scan. Does anyone know what this is for? is it see if it has spread? thanks in advance
Hi .
Sorry to hear about your mum . The CT scan is very good at picking up any obvious spread . The PET scan has a completely different mechanism and picks up hot spots but they have to be around about 1 cm before they are picked up . My mum always gets one before surgery . Totally my opinion but a bit of an insurance policy to make sure everything is detected . They are a routine part of planning and information gathering for the surgeons or oncologist to get a clear image of what is going on before they proceed . I would fully expect them to do one .
How is your mum handling things ?
take care,
