J start chemo on 23/8 and hear I have to have a pump attached for 48 hours; how do you sleep with that?

What else does it affect?

And; does anyone in a similar position live near Alton in Hampshire?

My wife used to hang it on the side of our bed in its pouch. It’s important to keep it lower than your heart though. It was no bother and didn’t affect anything else during the day. It’s really easy - just don’t get the tube caught round a door handle!

  • Hi.. I had a central line in my chest for administring the chemo and I also had the pump for 48 hours. It's about the size of a baby's bottle and it was attached to the tube of my central line. I was also worried about sleeping with it but it was fine. I pushed my bedside table up to my bed and placed the bottle between that and the pillow. I wasn't told about it having to be above or below the heart, maybe that depends on where your line is, but worth checking with your doctor. This was about 5 years ago but I doubt if much has changed since then! (I live about 30 miles from Alton.)

Yes, you're probably right about that. My wife had a portacath inserted under her skin just below her shoulder, with a tube that went into a main vein in her neck and down to just above her heart. Maybe because the outlet was so close to her heart, that might be why it was mentioned to her to keep the bottle lower the than her heart. We never really questioned it and it was no bother to do.
