Hi Everyone
My first time posting and after some advice please
So back at the end of April I was diagnosed with bowel cancer that had spread to lymph nodes, liver, lungs and small amount of my hip bone. No, not great!
Anyway, I’m just coming to the end of six cycles of chemo with planitumab (or however you spell it!) and Id really like a proper holiday with the fam before whatever kicks off next... Out of this country, in the warm for about a week!
Any advice as to how to get this past my oncologist? Any places more likely to get approved than others? I’ve heard that cruises aren’t great... perhaps the canaries??
Thankyou!
Hi , Welcome to the forum and glad you joined in .
A holiday sounds lovely . My mum has been a stage 4 patient for ten years . The first few years we were cautious about going abroad but we told her oncologist that we had hoped to go on a large family holiday and when would be the best time to navigate this with her scans etc . She felt she was well enough and pushed some scans back to fit around the timing .
Insurance is a bit more difficult but some companies are great . There is a travel thread you might find helpful . The insurance companies were fine with Europe but not so fine with Greece etc . We have done a cruise . Insurance was a bit more expensive, but you do have doctors on the big ships . Note of caution though I noticed they are quick to put people ashore as soon as they are ill straight to hospital they go , so does depend on where you are going . Again I got the feeling they were fine with Europe.
The other factor the oncologist mentioned to my mum is she has developed a small blood clot in one of her arteries . They did mention that she has to walk around during the flight . She uses flight socks . My friend has just gone to the US whilst on chemo for stage 4 disease and has been given guidance regarding blood clots . She decided on business class to put her feet up !!!
Hope you get a lovely well earned holiday . How has your treatment been ? You will be glad to get a break .
take care ,
