Hi everyone , Laura is recovering well after her surgery and is getting used to and coming to terms with the stoma . Her issue at the moment is heartburn , is this related to the surgery ? She did complain a lot about it over the Christmas period but it seemed to settle down so we put it down to over indulgence !
Im just wondering if it’s common after her surgery or should we mention it to her doctor ?
Were meeting her consultant on Monday to discuss her results and the next step .
Thanks in advance !
Hi
Really good news that Laura is recovering and getting to grips with her stoma management, a step in the right direction.
The heartburn could be down to acid reflux and diet I would suggest keeping a food diary to see if anything she eats triggers it off. A food diary is good for other reasons as it helps to identify problems, everything eaten and drunk should be recorded and any adverse effects noted like wind, odour, change in output. There is a very simple app in the Android play store that I've found very useful as I can enter the information that I want to enter without being complicated, if you look on the play store under food diary it's a green box with a white leaf in the centre.
She should remember that it's small meals often and to drink lots of fluids but not at the same time
At the beginning of my journey I was prescribed Omeprazole for gastric problems and this is also a medication that is prescribed for acid reflux.
Never any harm in speaking to a doctor if something is causing concern.
Realise not much help on this one but hopefully Laura's heartburn will be short-lived maybe someone else will have some further insight for you.
Wishing Laura good luck on Monday hopefully the results will be good and the next steps are put into place very quickly and another hurdle pushed out of the way.
Regards
Ian
Thankyou Ian , it’s probably something she ate so , I’ll suggest the food diary to her and hopefully we can pinpoint the problem , thanks again
Hi there!
I do not know if it is relted to surgery, but I had truly awful heartburn and reflux after my surgery. For the first few days, it was dreadful, and very painful. I was told this was in part due to my body ejecting the gas that had been used to inflate my abdomen for surgery. But it continued for a few weeks, possibly as my body got used to functioning slightly differently. I was put on to ranitidine on a daily basis, and given lansoprazole for times when it was acute. I've had a history of stomach ulcers, and the surgeons wanted to ensure that I did not develop another one, as it would increase risk of stomach cancer.
I have no clue if this might be remotely related to what Laura is experiencing. I can only speak of my own case. This is what happened to me. However, I do hope it settles for her, as whatever the cause, heartburn and reflux are pretty unpleasant!
Robin.
