Mum recently diagnosed with bowel cancer which has advanced locally in to the abdomen.

Currently awaiting response from specialists in Basingstoke for potential surgery to cure.

The surgery would be major involving removing organs and a long time in hospital.

If cannot go ahead with this then palliative chemotherapy.

Does anyone know how long this prolonges life or had this type of surgery treatment to advise what to expect?

  • Hi Jimbob ,

Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your mum.

If you click on my user name you can read my mum’s story . Whilst different organs it was also extensive surgery and a similar prognosis.

The hospitals that carry out Hipec surgery are centres of clinical excellence and some patients do very well indeed . The surgery is very extensive as far as I know but with time many people make a good recovery . Whilst some people are not operable there are quite a few managing localised spread with chemo alone . In fact some are getting results that would cause them to be cautious about stopping chemo to have the surgery .

Recovery from such major surgery does take time but each week should see some improvement . My mum had 73% of her liver removed and recovery was slow . However she had an epidural the first two days and experienced staff looked after her in a high dependence unit where she was well monitored. Then she was transferred to a surgical ward for around ten days and oral pain relief was started . After about a week she was able to walk to the toilet but slept a lot . Then she made it home but require help with activities of daily living for around a month . Slowly she got there .

All the best with the consultation. Hope she gets the best pathway for her .

    Thinking of you too.

    take care ,
