I've read an article in a newspaper that says the chemo made the woman more sick and that's what ended her life not the cancer. Apparently there have been others and a test to see if there is a DPD deficiency which is an enzyme produced in the liver but this test is expensive and they don't let you know about it. I'm worry as this is the drug I am taking and this hasn't been mentioned to me I even took it whilst pregnant as they said it was a mild dose. Anyone else heard anything about this?
Hi Lilnlarge
I can see that you are having concerns about the drug you are taking and even more after reading the newspaper article, there is a view in this forum that sometimes newspaper articles do not paint a true picture
I would like to suggest that you repost you question directly to our specialist Ask a Nurse page and see what the nurses have to say, don't worry if there is a delay sometimes they can take up 2 days but they will answer you and hopefully put your mind at rest.
While you are waiting hopefully you'll get some responses from the other members

Hi Lilnlarge
There was a post a couple of months ago about chemo doseage and is very well informed on things about chemo so hopefully he will be along shortly?
Take care

My dad also read the same article just before he was due to have the 5fu treatment. He asked for a dpd test but was told by a nurse they wouldn't test for it unless he had severe symptoms.
My dad declined the 5fu until he could have the test, his oncologist decided to arrange the blood test for it and turns out he has a partial deficiency so the original treatment wouldn't be appropriate.
They have suggested halfing the dose or the other is to not have any treatment.
We had to fight for the test and it was worth it as my dad was one of the few people who do have the defiency.
If you are not 100% confident push for the test, it's your body and your life.
