Hi,

I have been diagnosed with cancer in the Sigmoid colon and will have surgery to remove it, also dependant on the success of the surgery in terms of having a stoma or further treatment in terms of chemotherapy from the pathology results.

Also I am having further scans on my liver to rule certain lumps out. I will learn more on Wednesday when I see my surgeon on the liver situation.

Since the awareness of such cancers out there in the wider community is not as well received despite campaigns and advertising by well known charities etc, it is even well less so in the deaf community, particularly through poor english or understanding and fear.

Since I come from a family that has medical background, it has equipped me with such knowledge and to know one's body that you are aware if things are not right and what to do about it. That is how I learned of my bowel cancer and that it was caught early, meaning that this will be more treatable than in the latter stages.

I am thinking of doing a vlogs or posts to document my journey with bowel cancer and hopefully educate along the way. It will be done in Facebook and I'm unsure about doing a vlog in sign language as I am not all that technically literate in IT as to how to subtitle my vlogs.

And I am very aware that post op, it may be very straightforward or may require further treatment dependant on the outcome of the pathology of the excised area of the colon and the scan of my liver. That my energy levels will be impacted by this.

Any recommendations and advice would be appreciated on this. Thank you for reading this.

  • Hi ,

Welcome to the forum . That sounds a wonderful idea . I will confess that I am rubbish with technology and was only yesterday getting mocked by my loving son as he imitated me trying to use my mobile . However I am happy to pass it onto our community support team tomorrow to see if they can assist you . They may be able to access help from other departments . Really not sure but happy to ask .

Reaching out is what Macmillan is all about and it sounds great .

    take care,

    Court

    Hello Livisamuff,

I have been posting updates on my husband's status via CaringBridge. It's free and works quite well - as a more traditional way to send information, maybe a complement to your Vlog?

    Best of luck XXXX
