My father in law has recently undergone surgery to remove part of his bowel due to cancer. He is really struggling post op and has had to have 2 further surgeries as the wound on his stomach is just not healing, the stitches keep splitting and on the 2nd revisit they have now decided to pack it out with gauze and then dress it. It's causing him pain and distress and you can actually see his bowel when they change the dressing, the hole is rather distressingly large!
On top of this he is struggling to pass urine, they have put in a catheter and removed it again numerous times now having it or not neither helps and therefore he is in lots of pain due to not being able to empty his bladder and not able to sleep well either.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had experience of this or can offer any advice?
He has been back to the outpatients surgical advice ward twice but they have not been very helpful and he is now quite distressed. My mother on law is struggling to look after him as she has Parkinsons and the only care package is a nurse once a day to change dressings.
My other half and his sister are visiting as often as possible but we are all concerned about both of them.
Hi and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry you've had to find us.
I'm not a member of this group but I was passing and noticed that your post hadn't had any replies. It could be that no one here has had the same experience as your father-in-law or that they just haven't seen the post yet. By replying to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the page where hopefully it'll be seen by someone with the experience you need.
I'm also going to tag my fellow Community Champion court into my reply as she helps to look after this group and can probably help more than I can.

Hi ,
Unfortunately I don't have experience of this particular situation. Having said that, after my first operation I shared a ward with a lady who came in for a minor procedure, and they just would not discharge her until she was comfortably able to pass urine.
A different issue: After my second operation I had a concern about wound infection, and two GP's stated categorically that I did NOT have an infection. The day after the second visit, I sneezed causing a rather large abscess in the wound to burst (fortunately to the outside and not inward). A swab later confirmed infection.
What I am trying to say, is do not take NO for an answer!
In my case the GP's were not helpful, but the surgical ward at the hospital was brilliant (that's where I went after the abscess), but maybe you could try your dad's GP?
Hope they get it sorted soon.
Kind regards,
Yolande
Very sorry I did not pick up your post . I have been away on holiday and only popped on once or twice . This does sound pretty pressing . You might like to speak to our helpline staff to guide you on the best way forward in how to raise this or access more specialist staff to get involved . It legitimately requires more attention . As suggested I would start with the GP . Sometimes it does require some advocacy to get the help required .
The helpline number is 0808 808 0000 . Other people here may also have some advise when they pop on .
Send him our best wishes for a very speedy resolution.
take care.
