Just a quick recap - my hubby has bowel cancer that has spread to his liver (which is riddled with it).  He’s finished his first course of chemo and the good news is that the tumours have shrunk by about 30%.  The biggest tumour in his liver has reduced from about 9cm to 6.5 and another from 6 to 4.5and the overall reduction was about 30%. He suffered quite badly with a sore mouth and mouth ulcers during the first course and they’ve reduced the chemo now by 30% for the second course. He’s had his first treatment and definitely had fewer side effects. The medical team have told us that the reduction of chemo won’t affect the results at all - I can’t quite get my head around this. Has anyone else had their chemo reduced due to the side effects and still had further shrinkage?  Our only hope of a cure is if the tumours in the liver reduce further, giving us the option of other treatments.

  • Hi ,

I totally understand what you are saying . It happened to my mum . Her dose was set slightly higher than the pharmaceutical recommendation anyway so there is room for finding their own tolerance level and for my mum it did not decrease efficiency. It just removed the level of toxicity that was very debilitating. The second year was just as effective in disease management but significantly better in terms of her quality of life .

has written a post about toxicity and you might like to read it .

It is fantastic that he is responding well to treatment . That’s the main point in disease management . Such good news . I was amazed to see how well it continued to work at a slightly reduced dose .

You both must be so happy with the results . Now for more shrinkage !!

    Take care ,

Thank you. That’s really good to hear. Just a quick question - not sure if you can answer or not but hubby is complaining of heavy and stiff joints. Wondering if it’s a side effect of the treatment ... or just old age haha.

  • Hi . Yes I suffer from stiff joints but don’t know if it’s from the chemo, old age or menopause although I think we can eliminate the last one for your hubby!

There was a post about a month ago about joint stiffness and I managed to find a link to a post which mentions it if you want to take a look?

Hope the chemo continues to attack those tumours and the doseage reduction helps with the side effects

    Take care
