It's been a long journey so far for my partner. Originally diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer back in 2015. He had an OP and chemo in 2016. All well until last year when it was found to have returned in the same place. He had salvage surgery and referred for hipec. He was turned down for this and in the wait inbetween the cancer regrew in exactly the same place with a few peritenal mets. He just completed 6 months of folfox. The first 6 sessions showed reduction in all mets. The second 6 showed no new growth and considered stable with a CEA level of 2 but remains inoperable. Now everything seems to have stopped. A vague promise over the phone of a scan and appointment in 3 months but he has had to chase every single appointment. No bloods booked. What does he do in the meantime if new symptoms appear? At the moment we are grateful he's in good health and just returned back to full time work but we feel in limbo. He's never been restaged, he has not been told of any further treatment he may be facing if any, whether the eventual aim is to cure or prolong. Hes seen 5 different consultants in 6 appointments. The last one to discharge him from current care was over the phone so no opportunity really for us to both ask questions. So what happens next? Is it normal to be told you will be seen in 3 months when he knows he still has the cancer and not knowing if its spreading? We feel like we should be enjoying the break but not when we haven't been given much information about going forward. Would feel so much better knowing there was a plan
Hi ,
Sorry to hear that you have been left without knowing his treatment plan . I think it’s perfectly reasonable to expect to understand how they plan to proceed and what course his plan would take in the future .
You might like to contact our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 who could guide you in how to best tackle this . My own approach is to ask for clarity in an email as it gives them time to consider a written response and engage a bit further without being reactionary. It might also be a good junction to think about a second opinion to see how other clinicians would approach his care . Gives you more information to negotiate with .
But I do think his care should be clearly communicated and how to feed back to his team if symptoms arise . Not knowing raises anxiety and that needs to be addressed .
take care ,

Just thought I'd update on this...since April and finishing chemo my partner still hasn't been seen by anyone. He had a scan beginning of the month plus bloods but no appointment given till next week so 5 week wait for results. He finished his last chemo end of March. Do these waiting times sound right? Last scan back on April showed stable disease. We still don't know of any treatment plan. He still feels well, working full time. Just suffers with occasional aches and pains
Hi Jane
These waiting times are about right at your stage from my experience. They normally wait around 12 weeks after chemo stops as it keeps working for a while after you stop the treatment. When I went into the monitoring phase I was told that there is a nationwide shortage of consultant radiologists to review CT scans so reports take 4 to 6 weeks as they are not classed as urgent and then they are reviewed by the MDT meeting so I am automatically given a results date at least 6 weeks after the scan. I was told that some health trusts are sending scans to France for review. Obviously in the early stages it is classed as urgent so it all happens much faster. The waiting drives me nuts as well. Some health trusts may have shorter waiting times.

Thank you Nicky. It's the waiting around that is the worse and the lack of information passed onto us x
