hello,

my mother in law had an emergency operation 4 weeks ago to remove her large intestine and appendix as they discovered cancerous tumours and she now has a stoma bag for life. She has been in denial of being sick for ages and now we know why she was so unwell. She’s refused all information from the doctors, and we are trying to work out how to support her. We know she had bowel cancer and she seems to think she’s fine now that it’s been removed. She has a ct scan on two weeks and then possibly chemo. How can we prepare for this?

  • Hi , Welcome to the forum . Sorry to hear about your mother in law . It does sound as though she is processing information in manageable blocks that she can deal with .

Our information section has a Bowel cancer advise leaflet that takes you through from diagnosis to chemotherapy if required . There is also our helpline staff 0808 808 0000 who would be happy to chat through any aspect with her .

After her scan results are through they have an MDT meeting to discuss her case . If they feel chemotherapy is required she will be referred to an oncologist. They will invite her in to discuss the need for chemotherapy and what will be administered and side effects etc . They will give her lots of information leaflets and contact numbers .

If chemotherapy is not needed she will remain under the care of the surgeon .

She May get a specialist nurse she can contact who will support her as well .

itcan take a few weeks to get the process going and give her time to consider her situation . The helpline staff could help you access leaflets for her if she does not like the online information .

    take care ,

    Court
