Morning all, I was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer and am now recovering from surgery.
I am on a low residue diet and starting to introduce fruit and fibre back in, any recommendations on what has helped please?
Many thanks
Hi Rose
I have my surgery next Friday , what did you have ? did you have a bag ?
Hi Rose and welcome to the online community and although I'm sorry that you have had to join us I am very pleased to see that you have found the Bowel (colon and rectal) cancer forum Group and have reached out to us to discuss your low residue diet.
I thought this Cancer Research UK on low residue diet might be of interest to you and answer some of your questions.
One thing you should remember is that we are all different and our bodies react differently and the diet is not one size fits all.
I would always suggest that you start to keep a food diary where you can record everything you eat including cheeky little treats, how you feel after eating a particular food type and of course how you output looks (watery or firm) with the frequency. Sorry but poo is the normal topic of discussion on here.
By keeping note of your eating habits and output you can add or eliminate foods until you find the things that your body can tolerate.
No doubt you have been advised to drink lots of fluids throughout the day and this is also very important and should be recorded in your food diary but you should avoid fizzy drinks, drinks containing caffeine and alcohol (sorry)!
Did you become a bag wearer or were you spared the pleasure. If you have a bag and need any advice on pouches and other products or what to do if you have skin problems around your stoma please give me a shout out and I will do my best to help you quickly solve any problem.
Hopefully you are not a bag wearer but please remember what goes in your mouth comes out again and if does not it can be a big problem and believe me that is something you want to avoid.
Please keep in touch ask any questions you want, there's always someone about to answer you.
Ian

Best of luck with your surgery next Friday.
I cant remember the medical name but I had the lower part of the large bowel removed. Thankfully no bag.
Take care of yourself and good luck again for Friday and I wish you a speedy recovery.
Thank you so much for the link, I will check it out.
Yes am starting a food diary, my bowel has been a bit slow to wake up and am taking laxatives twice a day just so I don’t get constipation.
Thankfully I didn’t need a bag and learning that I mainly just talk about poo now ;-).
