Hi all, I have just been diagnosed with a 4cm restrictive sigmoid tumour and am obviously nervous and worried. I am just waiting for my treatment plan to be formulated. Anyone got any experience of this type of cancer? Thank you
Hi and welcome to the board. My tumour was lower down in the rectum but there are a few on here who have had them in the sigmoid so I’ll tag them in
Reetpetite58, , @Itsy Bitsy and Stwhitm
You could also type sigmoid in the search box at the top of the screen to see previous posts.
Please do not google while you’re waiting for results - the information online is out of date and downright scary in places - stay on here and ask anything you want to.
This is actually the worst time and, once you have a treatment plan in place, then things will seem a little better. Take things 1 step at a time and we’re all happy to help and support you through this
Take care

Hi , well done for posting on here, you will get so much help and encouragement. Do not despair, treatment is improving all the time, and bowel cancer is eminently treatable.
I was found to have sigmoid cancer in Jan 2017. I had my op in April followed by chemo.
Ther were a few hiccups along the way, but I got through it and am doing well I am just going through my 2 year investigations. I was T3N0M0. You can read my profile for details.
My main way of coping was being active and walking as much as I could, starting from the HDU, and however bad I felt, it always helped.
Please PM me if you need further help/advice.
You will feel better when you have a plan.
Good luck
Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!
Hi ,
I notice you referred to a "restrictive" sigmoid tumour. Can you clarify that a bit more for me? The reason I ask, is that I was diagnosed with a sigmoid tumour, 4cm, after a complete bowel blockage. Sounds to me that yours might be similar? You can read a bit more on my profile by clicking on my name.
My initial symptoms was quite acute, and by the time I was diagnosed with cancer it almost came as a relief because finally I knew what was wrong. In my case there was no spread to the lymph nodes, so I did not need any chemotherapy. Three surgeries later and I feel like my old self again, of course apart from the multiple scars on my tummy and increased bowel movements due to the absence of a sigmoid colon.
As Karen said, the waiting is the worst. Once you know what the treatment plan will be, things should be a lot better (as better as I could be in this situation we find ourselves). When is your next appointment? Do you know when they will have a treatment plan for you? Let us know what happens.
All the best,
Yolande
Hi Yolande, thank you for your reply. I had to go down to the hospital last night as was in moderate pain. Xray showed blockage, they also told me as I was there that there is no spread to lungs or liver as those were results I was waiting for too. If blockage does not shift and pain increases I have to go straight back in. Restrictive tumour meaning allowing less through so it does sound like your situation doesn’t it. I have a meeting with the consultant tomorrow to hear the latest. I’m just so relieved my other organs are clear. Lots of love, Amanda.
Hi Amanda,
It does sound exactly the same as what I had, so I am very glad for you they picked it up relatively early. How did it go with the consultant on Friday? Did they give you a treatment plan yet? And how are the bowels doing, specifically with regards to the pain / blockage? Make sure you stay well hydrated! Hopefully you can get a surgery date very soon.
All the best,
Yolande
Hi Yolande,
Great to hear from you. I have pain but am now blockage free, I think the 8 biopsies (8?!?!) they took disturbed things and that’s the achy pain I feel now. Surgery is on 18th. I look forward to getting that out of the way and moving into the next phase.
All the best
Amanda
Hi Amanda,
8 Biopsies? Ouch!
Anyway, I am not around next week to wish you good luck for the operation, so I am going to do so now before I forget: Good luck. You'll rock this!!!
My top tip is super-soft comfy PJ's with a VERY stretchy waistband (I sourced mine from Debenhams); alternatively a nightdress... which might actually be a good idea for the first couple of days anyway.
All the best
Yolande
