hi I joined group not long ago, my hubby picked up in national  bowel screening programme, he had colonoscopy onTue and been told cancer in rectum.  Now people on here say don't google.......I did.  Now full too full of information.

I am just wondering is there anyone on here with good news story of getting through rectal cancer, I feel I need to restore the balance!

hubby still to have MRI CT etc, it's only been two days feels like years.......thank you

  • I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in January 2012. After an operation to remover the tumour I was left with an ileostomy and then had six months of chemo. My ileostomy was reversed in 2013. Since then I have been fine and was discharged from the oncologist last year. I can't pretend that the treatment was easy but rectal cancer is curable.

    Good luck for your husband!

  • I shall refer you to what I say in my profile....

"I was diagnosed with a rectal tumour in October 2016. Several scans and appointments later, I had a course of pre-op radiotherapy in January followed by an anterior resection and loop ileostomy.

Recovered well from that but they were concerned about my liver as a shadow had show up in previous scans. This was inconclusive but they wished to operate to make sure. Thankfully, the operation also went well and they couldn't find any trace of tumour in the pathology report. Good news.

Recovered well from that too.  ;-))  Now they've got me on an 8 cycle course of capcetabine to help prevent any recurrence. My oncologist is a bit more positive now that my liver is apparently OK. So fingers crossed.

Coping well with the chemo, apart from occasional tiredness and one or two other very mild symptoms. Let's hope that continues.

Update 31/1/19    Received results of latest scan two years after first operation.  Everything is clear. So good news.

6 monthly check ups now but I have to decide very soon whether to have my ileostomy reversed."

So, I've been through quite a lot but everything went according to plan and I'm doing well so far.
Maybe a little early to say I'm cured but I've passed the "two year" hurdle and things are starting to look more optimistic.

So, best wishes for your husband. There's every reason to be hopeful.
