1st BCG - issues inserting Catheter

Was due to start BCG induction this week, 9 weeks after 2nd TURBT confirmed 1st TURBT had removed everything and confirmed it was T1G3.

Unfortunately the catheter couldn't be inserted - different nurses and different types of catheter tried but without success.  Took a pause in attempts for a bit and re-tried later but still didn't work.

Had a flexi a couple of weeks ago which confirmed no regrowth so I'm not so worried about that at the moment, but can't believe i'll be the first bloke where catheter couldn't be inserted and wonder what happens if a catheter cannot be inserted.  The nurses were confident they would start with different type of catheter next week and it should be OK, so for the moment I'm hoping it all works next week.  Nurses and MDT have been very good at keeping me updated and i know they will advise what is to happen if a catheter can't be inserted.

Was looking to check is anyone has had or heard of this type of issue before and what the solution was ?

  • They've struggled with Mr D, several times. There have been dire supply problems with smaller catheters last few months at least for supply to GP prescription. There is a relaxant med you can have though not sure it works for everyone. Do you know if you have 'benign prostate hyperplasia' BPH ie enlarged prostate common with age?

    Hope they can sort it,

Thanks Denby, good to hear not I'm not unique - I don't think there were any prostrate issues but will double check and can make inquiries about the relaxant if no success next week.

Found out prostrate is slightly enlarged but not too bad.  Got medication to relax the muscles and the catheter was successfully inserted this time.  That's the 1st one out of the way, feel I've got off quite lightly with no side-effects, not even pain peeing. Just glad it has been started.

I've read sometimes there is a bit of a cumulative impact after several BCGs, so I guess each week will bring suspense waiting to see what happens, but thankfully for now all is good.

  • Hi . Good to know things weren't too bad. When I was first diagnosed, I was also told I had an enlarged prostate. That was several years ago and no one has mentioned it since. Hope the rest of your treatment goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi 5amsung.

I'm about 3 weeks behind you. I get my first BCG on 19th Oct. They also found that I had an enlarged prostate but so far for all the flexis and MMC doses they have never had a problem with the catheter. I hope it stays that way.

    Hi Mugwump,

Wishing you well for when the BCG starts.  Either the nurses have worked out a route to my bladder or the medication to relax prostrate has worked as my 2nd instillation was performed very easily.  So there are definitely things which can be done if it causes difficulties.

2nd one done and again no major side-effects, although I would say I was more aware of something, almost like I could feel where my bladder was - but not major inconvenience.

Have been drinking plenty of water as many of the members recommend.
