Following a CT scan to map the treatment area my husband was told his bladder cancer had spread to aortic lymph nodes and is incurable. He was given chemotherapy which has reduced the cancer to undetectable in that area and the radiotherapy is to now go ahead.

He has a further scan on Wednesday 9th September 2020 then treatment will start on 22nd.

My biggest concern is that the scan will show further spread as he hasn't had any treatment for the last few weeks.

I thought radiotherapy was less aggressive than chemotherapy but am very apprehensive about how it will affect him.

Any advice or shared experience would be useful.

Thank you

  • Sorry I have no personal experience of chemo or radiotherapy, but I do know they often have to let the body rest & recuperate from one therapy before starting another. My understanding is that if the treatment is working, the few weeks wait is not a problem. If the treatment hasn't worked, they may have to think again anyway.

Best wishes, through a very anxious time for you.

  • Hello. As Teasswill says, a couple of weeks in the great scheme of things does not usually make much difference. Several scans are standard to compare to see if there have been any changes and also gives them a clearer picture of what they are dealing with. I had 6 weeks of daily chemoradiation and didn't really have any problems with it. Tiredness towards the end set in and afterwards, I had erratic bowels for a few weeks, but this settled down. The actual treatment is painless. My cancer was confined to the bladder and so far has done the trick for me. I hope it goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
