Hi everyone,
I just completed BCG number 11 of 12 yesterday. I'm on the maintenance 3. I was in extreme pain all day and night, my urethra feels really inflamed and there's blood in my urine. I'm really stressed at the thought of doing my last BCG session next week.
I'm wondering if anyone out there only managed 2 out of 3 treatments and how did their doctors feel about it? I want to tell my doctor no for the third one as I can't go through this excruciating pain again so soon. I usually have a pretty high pain threshold.
I've called my hospital and they're calling me back so just waiting to hear what they advise.
Surely 2 out of 3 ain't bad
Hi . I did not have BCG, but by coincidence, I was at the hospital this morning for my check up. Talking to the guy who came out before me, he told me he did not finish his BCG treatment for reasons similar to you. He was given the all clear, so good luck to you. I'm sure the hospital will give you some good advice when you speak to them. Best wishes.
Hi Beach2019, I think reduced size doses and longer gaps between maintenance can both be possible. Also as Rily says people can stop early because their bladder cant tolerate more. You need to talk to your nurse and get help. Hope things feel more comfortable soon. xx
Thanks Herothedog,
My doctor told me to see how I feel as the week progresses and they could push it forward by one week. I'll see how I go. I appreciate the advice. I'm not so bad this evening. Painkillers are my friend...
Hi, did you have the same nurse do the BCG each time? Mr D found the pain was minimal by one wonderful nurse, bearable with the usual one, and unbearable with another once-only one. Sheer deftness getting the catheter in, or not. Anyway hope you feel better soon.

My first catheter was shoved in by a junior doctor without any sense of concern for my urethra and this generated some eye watering and very fruity Naval language from me. The second one was done by a kindly mature nurse who used lots of silicone gel so it slid in easily.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
Hi Denby,
Thanks for your reply. Its the same nurse every time and she's very gentle and careful. The hospital have told me that all this pain and blood is a sign that its working.. Its never been anywhere near as bad as this but unfortunately this can happen too. Your bladder just says no... I think I will opt out of 3/3 and stick with the 2 I've done until the next time.
Hope Mr. D is doing well.
ouch!! You poor thing. The naval language though
