Phone call this morning from wonderful CNS congratulating on my all clear yesterday and wanting to discuss whether because of COVID-19 I would wish to stop my BCG maintenance? I have had 18 doses. Obviously if I have more BCG doses, then during that time I will be extremely vulnerable to the virus. If I stop now before completing the 27 doses of protocol maybe the cancer will pop back up. Maybe it will pop back up anyway. This is the first time in the last two years that I have had two clear cystoscopies in a row so part of me feels it would be premature to stop treatment. On the other hand continuing clearly means I would need to be rigid in my shielding for the foreseeable future, potentially till Spring 2021 when the treatment would end. I asked her to let me sleep on it. What do you think dear BC family? I would appreciate hearing your views. xxx
Hi H. Tough decision and I can see your dilemma. Has your CNS swayed you in any direction? Would it be possible to delay treatment for a while and resume a bit later on when things have calmed down a bit. Whichever way you go there is an element of risk. Not much help, sorry. Best wishes.
Only you know how trying you find the shielding, and only your near and dear how hard it is for them. In one way the sooner you carry on the sooner you will conclude the course. Since none of us know how long the virus will be around if you conclude the course at least then you can let yourself loose on the world if the virus has gone, and no worse off if not. And you'd have the peace of mind re the BC that you'd done the max. Just my take-some would decide alone, some with a chat with those affected by your shielding.
happy thinking

Only you can decide - it's a tricky one. I have heard that there is controversy about the need for the follow up maintenance doses after the initial course.
But I can see that for you the last doses might make you feel more secure. I suspect we're all going to have to be careful for some time to come, lots of activities will be curtailed for months yet, so maybe Spring 2021 won't seem so far away anyway.
I'm feeling frustrated that with the latest relaxations, there will be more traffic, more noise, but still a long way off being able to do the activities I'd most like to do. I don't want to shout at friends at 2 m in the garden, I'd rather have a phone call. My best friend is shielding until at least August & I do miss having a natter over coffee.
Hi H, as you probably know I only had 15 BCGs the reason ... there was a world shortage at the time, so 15 it was and I was told the thinking at some hospitals is now to give a years worth (even though their still giving the 27 at mine so not really sure. I was told a years worth was better for the bladder and must say I’ve had no problem. But unlike you I’ve never had a recurrence so not much help really. Grade 3 pta and over 7 years clear. Good luck with whatever you decide to go with x
Hi Sue I was thinking about you today, your 15 doses and the world shortage. It has always cheered me up that you have stayed clear for so long. I have also read reports which suggests less maintenance is fine and less damaging. I'd be really happy to stop if it weren't for the 2 reoccurrences. Ho hum. My initial tumour was Grade 2 PT1. The reoccurrences were first one low grade, second one intermediate grade (whatever that means, higher than low I guess?) Thanks for input everyone I'm going to sleep on it. x
A really difficult decision Mr W had 23 bcg and they said as he had been clear for 3 years he didn't need the final 3 We worried about him missing the last 3 and then I thought about Sue and her 15
We came to the conclusion they wouldn't have made the decision if it wasnt ok
A good idea to sleep on it and as previously suggested weigh up the pros and cons and write them down
lots of live
