Hello Everyone,
hope you are all keeping well through these difficult times. Next Tuesday I have my 12th BCG treatment -my Urology nurse is mint but the question I keep forgetting to ask is .................When having BCG treatment how long is your immune system actually suppressed for ? Am I also right in thinking that the cancer itself will weaken my immune system ?
Does any one know ?
( My Diagnosis was pT1 G3 & CIS
Thanks
Hang in there everyone - much love to you all xxxx
Normy
I have been wondering the same Normy. I have a cystoscopy next Friday and if clear BCG doses 19, 20, 21 due in April. Not sure I fancy a suppressed immune system during a pandemic either. I'd be interested to hear what your team advise. Best wishes H x
Hi to you both
I've been having a poke around & some say 28 days, whilst others say up to 9 months. I'd think it could possibly be down to age & fitness levels. Perhaps we should wait for someone who knows for definite.
Keep safe all x
Hi,I hope you can all get some clarification soon,it’s such a concern.I would like more information on recovering from surgery and corona virus.I don’t feel my immune system is up to strength yet and am staying at home.I wish it was quieter though,my next door neighbour is currently operating very loud machinery ! Love to you all Jane xx
Bit of a tricky question with no clear answers. BCG in to the bladder is an immunotherapy treatment which stimulates the immune system in to fighting the cancer cells and the side effects. It does not cause the same damage to the blood count as chemotherapy does. Saying that, if the immune system is active in fighting the cancer, would it be as effective if something new came along such as this virus? In effect, it would be fighting on two fronts and so in a way, be compromised. That is my take on things. I know that some places are postponing BCG treatments because of the risks. Be interesting to get some feedback from the medics when you go for treatments. Best wishes.
I think you are right Rily, BCG does compromise the immune system. My dental hygienist won't clean my teeth in the same month that I get my BCG doses because of this. x
As ever I must preface with, always check with your pharmacist and or doctor/s. That said, I have recently been sent convincing argument backing what I was brought up with by my science oriented parents in the 50s/60s. This is, that because the human body cannot make for itself the significant amounts of Vitamin C it requires, it is necessary to take this as supplements. Because also the human body cannot store Vitamin C, it is much the best to use sustained/time release ones.
The writer of this advice also suggests lysine, an amino acid [=building block of protein], which helps stop the virus causing breakdown of your cell walls, ie, of your body tissues. Take it or leave it, but he points out that big pharma/chemical companies are not interested in wellness but profits. To protect these they invest a great deal in trashing the reputations of their critics and brainwashing decision makers, politicians, medics and the general public. Even if many of us do have good cause to be grateful for some of their products, the argument holds good for me.
There is also advice that the virus hates heat, and is destroyed by the natural acid in your stomach. So it is said to be wise to drink plenty of hot drinks, and sip water every 15 mins. This is to ensure any viruses you may have in your mouth, from being near infected people/touching infected surfaces, get washed down into your stomach. This keeps them from moving into your lungs which is more dangerous.

Well an interesting thing about BCG is that Holland is undertaking experiments using BCG [but the vaccine rather than intravesical] to see if it protects healthcare workers against Coronavirus. The thought being that it stimulates the immune system and may mean healthcare workers who do pick up the virus may have milder symptoms... So interesting and maybe a positive effect??
Who knows there maybe a sliver lining!!
It was a beautiful day today sun shining , birds singing and blossom coming out.
