Equipment p

I was supposed to have a flexible cystoscopy following my last Turbt to remove a superficial tumour in January 2020. Both my appointments have been cancelled because of non availability of a consultant and problems with equipment. I managed to speak to the Waiting List administration team at Preston Royal where I have had Radiotherapy and where I have rigid cystoscopies. I was told the equipment at Chorley Hospital where I have my flexible cystoscopies and my chemotherapy sessions is still not repaired. Moreover, because of uncertainty re equipment repair and extensive waiting list my appointment will now be sometime in May. I was told Royal Preston Hospital do not provide flexible cystoscopy services only Chorley. Mmmm bizarre! The kind lady did say she will try to get me an appointment at a private hospital in Preston under the NHS, as the moody blues sang “Watching and Waiting”

  • Hi Garviv,I’m so sorry to hear that your appointments have been cancelled and you are having to wait.It all sounds strange and unsatisfactory.I hope you can get seen before May.Love and best wishes.Jane xx

  • Hi Garviv. It does seem odd that the equipment has been out of order for so long. After all, it is just a camera on a stick. Wink Saying that, some of the monitors I have seen have been a bit dated.  Consultants don't usually do flexis. Mine have always been done by junior doctors or senior nurses. Hope you get sorted soon. I know how frustrating these delays can be. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • On the other hand it was the top consultant who did Mr Denby's flexi yesterday. No consistency across country but reassuring for us. If able to travel, is it worth asking if you can be internally inspected somewhere else again?

  • There seems to be a great variation between hospitals.I’ve never had a cystoscopy done by a nurse or a junior dr though there is always a nurse present. The equipment between places varies in our area too.Our health centre doesn’t provide heart monitors but a smaller centre a few miles away does. You have to get up really early to get one fitted and then return it at the same time the following day.Love Jane xx

  • Fingers crossed. Thanks for your wishes

  • Hello Riley

All my flexible cystoscopies (3) have been done by consultants. Yes I agree the equipment they use is low tech compared to some equipment  in the medical world. I think there is a backlog due to a shortage of technical and medical staff. I find it difficult to comprehend why they cannot undertake flexis at Preston Royal a much bigger hospital than Chorley. Que sera!

  • Hi Garviv, how shocking that there is only one place doing cystoscopies in your area. Even more shocking that the equipment/staffing is inadequate and NHS is having to sub it's work out to private hospitals. Hope you will get an appointment before May. x

  • Hi Garviv. Surprised they don't do it at Preston, the size of it. I had my radiotherapy there. I have had more than 20 flexis now, lost count. Very rarely seen the same person twice. I tend to get the junior doctors who are passing through as part of their training. Maybe they just use me to practice on. Best wishes.

    Hi Garviv,

It does seem shocking that you are having to wait so long for your flexi. The hospital I attend does flexis and has clinics in two other hospitals where flexible cystoscopies are also carried out. Any TURBTS etc are done at the main hospital.

I’m not surprised there is a backlog if it is a consultant who carries out the procedure not forgetting the expense of his services.

Specialist nurses carry out the flexis at Stepping Hill unless you attend the clinic on a Tuesday morning which is run by a junior doctor.

i know who I prefer, nurses every time!

    Hope you get sorted soon.

    Best wishes Luce x

  • Thanks Luce

I agree waiting from January to possibly May for a 10 minute procedure is disappointing and in my opinion unnecessary. I cannot believe equipment is out of order for weeks and weeks. My conspiracy theory head is on now! Staff shortages?, coranvirus? winter NHS problems?
