Hello All,
I’ve stumbled across this site as I googled my way around the internet trying to figure out what lies ahead for me. I’m 54, a non smoker (never smoked), no exposure to chemicals etc. in my home or work life.
I have not been diagnosed with cancer. 19 months ago I had blood in my first morning urine. It was very obvious and the color of merlot wine. After that morning it didn’t happen again, but I went to a urologist, had a cystoscope, an ultrasound and a CT scan and nothing out of the ordinary was found. I’ve had no issues or blood since 19 months ago until a few days ago. Again blood in my first pee of the morning. Not as dark as before, but clearly blood. Happened just that morning and was gone by the next pee. Four months ago I even had a kidney ultrasound as a check up for my hypertension diagnosis. Nothing found on my kidneys or in blood test results.
19 months ago when it first happened I had No idea that I had some high blood pressure happening. I read that hypertension can cause blood in urine. The night before this latest issue I took migraine medicine which when I looked up has a rare side effect of blood in urine. (Ugh... I tend to get the rare side effects)
I do not have any bladder pain, no urgency, no kidney pain. Just a bit of a pelvic pulling sensation which I chalked Up to maybe adhesions from surgery years ago. Again no pain or anything that would signal a problem. Just some achey feelings that a few over the counter pain relievers fix.
Of course I’m scared because reading Google will do that to you and I thought I could get an insight from people here who have more knowledge than I do at the moment. I’m waiting to get into urologist again and have an MRI scheduled on the 24th.
Thanks in advance for your response!
Sher
Hi
Could you repost this in our "Ask an expert" group, then a nurse can answer you?
S/,he may take a couple of working days to reply as they are mostly volunteers.
Good luck for the 24th.
Thanks
Hello Sher
Two of many things I've learned since my diagnosis are 1. Avoid Dr Google as it will mislead you and 2. Take one step at a time, try not to speculate about your condition.
Blood in your urine needs to be thoroughly checked and seeing the urologist is the natural next step. It may be caused by a variety of conditions not just cancer. I had no symptoms at all until I started peeing 'Merlot' (actually, it was the morning after a night on some Burgundy and a whack in the perineum from a bike saddle) and that set in train a series of scans, cystocopies and further treatment.
Keep us posted on your progress, usually we'll have the answer to your queries.
CB
Hello . I echo what CB says. Could be caused by a number of things, but blood in pee needs to be investigated. Your MRI scan may show up something as these are far more detailed and focused than CT scans. Best wishes.
Thank you. Of course I wish I was the type of person that could remain calm and patient, but no such luck.
I thought that having a 19 month span with no blood would suggest it couldn’t be cancer but I’ve read stories of women who were diagnosed with cancer months after their first hematuria.
Then I remember the vast amount of ibuprofen I took over the years for endometriosis...
I’m waiting to hear back from my doctor who did the scope 19 months ago so that I can get in for a scope ASAP. My concern is that he missed something 19 months ago.
Even though there are many causes for hematuria - all of them seem so serious.
Thank you for your support
Thanks CB
Easier said than done after a weird night of interrupted sleep and dreams from worrying.
i wish I was the practical thinker and could just stay chill. But my mind races wondering how, why and what if.
You’re bike story did make me wince. Ouch! Hopefully all is well for you now.
Sher
Sher-ee,
I don't think m/any of us remain calm, far from it in fact. I'm a googler too & frequently diagnose myself & poor MrB with allsorts!!!
My symptoms were like cystitis, after a good few weeks I thought I'd better see a Dr .… I never saw any blood, apart from a small amount after the procedure. Although it seems to be more these days after many procedures, & UTIs after the procedures.
There's lots of support here, God knows what I'd've done without these people. I'm a serial moaner, but they put me right.
All the best to you xxx
Update **
Hello all,
just an update as I had a cystoscope and kidney ultrasound and there was no cancer. Seems that I may have mild Nephritis due to the high doses of ibuprofen I took years ago. That kidney cells might be sloughing off at times which causes the blood in my urine. Kidneys are now more sensitive to this type of medication and was probably the reason it happened this time was due to taking a migraine medicine with a rare side effect of blood in the urine.
In any event it’s not serious and I will have to stick to taking Tylenol instead of NSAIDS.
Thank you for your kind words and insight when I needed it.
Wishing you all well and a Happy New Year.
Sher
Hi
