Hi

my Dad had a RC a couple of years back and yesterday and this morning his stoma bag has been full of dark red blood. Anyone else had this before and know what could be the cause?

  • Hi and welcome back to the group. I see it is a few years since you last posted, so assume Dad has been doing well. Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I am sure someone will be along with experience of this. It is always wise to let the medics know about these things. Does your Dad have a dedicated contact  number who he can contact for advice? Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

    Hi

The general advice from the Bladder and Bowel Association is

If you notice blood coming out of your stoma aperture, contact your GP or Stoma Care Nurse as soon as possible. The bleeding will probably be caused by a urinary tract infection and will easily be cleared up, but it must be investigated, being the weekend maybe a call to NHS111 would be the way forward.

Does he any other symptoms that might also indicate a urine infection

Hope this helps and your dad gets this cleared up quickly.

    Regards

    Ian

He went to the hospital they think it could be an infection, he has to go back tomorrow for a scan but he was allowed to come back home with antibiotics. He has some back pain with it. He has started antibiotics but the bag is still full of blood today. Do you know when this should start to clear if it is an infection?

  • Hi . Good to know your Dad has had medical attention. In my experience of antibiotics, they usually take about 3 days for any noticeable improvement. Hopefully, the scan is just precautionary, but he is in good hands. keep us posted. Best wishes.
