Hi All,
Mr D. was told he should have 3 Mitomycin before the next flexi. Last week lovely nurse was very deft with the catheter and instillation. He managed to keep it in for 90 mins which is pretty good for him and had no ill effects bar the usual fatigue.
Today a different nurse we've never seen before set about it. In moments he was saying " Something's not right". But she just rammed the catheter in harder then saw some chemo leaking around the catheter and asked me to call the senior nurse [ who has 'done' him many times with no particular problem, though not as easy and painless as the Romanian angel last week.] I go in with him in case of miscommunication as he has Aspergers. He said later he thinks they usually lubricate the catheter but he did not see this nurse do so...
Senior nurse came in, decided to continue with instillation. Breeezily said it would be fine as half had gone in and that would do. [If a half dose is enough why is the full dose what it is???]. Being on the spectrum he has a high pain threshold and doesn't easily complain; however painkillers do not work due to accompanying biochemical differences. So they said 'all done off you go' and left for him to get dressed.
He hadn't gone twenty paces when gripped by a spasm and all the remainder voided; thank heavens for pads. So we retired to the disabled loo for a change of underwear and pad. There was a small amount of fresh blood on the pad so the new-to-us nurse obviously 'caught' a blood vessel. We went back and had a word with senior nurse; she just excused this as maybe slightly swollen prostate so very easy to catch. She claimed one of the consultants had only asked for a single dose so he should not worry anyway, but will give him another to make 3 on week 4, if she can get further supply.
Ever since, rising four hours, his penis and whole area have been incredibly painful inside and out, having a wash once home to remove contamination from the skin [nurses did not do this] has not even helped. Slight blood in pee too. He has retired to bed already, says he doesn't feel up to proper dinner due to the pain...
Has anyone else had similar experiences and or got any tips for lessening/shortening pain beyond pints of lemon barley, given that paracetamol etc won't help?
Thanks for any help,
Denby
Hi Denby. Sorry to hear Mr. D. had a bad experience with a heavy handed nurse. I can't offer any advice regarding the pain, only to keep a check on his temperature to make sure he has not picked up an infection. Best wishes.
Sorry to hear about this awful treatment Denby. Thank goodness you were there to support and prepared with pads etc. Sincerely hope you get the Romanian angel again next time. I guess if Mr D can escape into sleep maybe things will be less sore in the morning. I have found deep breathing and relaxation techniques have helped with neuropathic pain I get from an old back injury. Best wishes to you both.
Thanks Rily. He's not feverish atm. Just feeling awful and understandably ashamed because he can't hold it at all the irritation is so severe, just as well we'd stocked up on pads. I just wish people would be more honest that skills differ, I'm sure there's something that nurse is really good at but her colleague insisted on defending her failure to the hilt despite the waste of a so-precious dose of the chemo and the trauma to us. [They forget carers, on the way to driving him in I was having the dentist work on a broken back tooth, jaw still aching now.] Just like all the bods who claim they will easily get pre-op bloods out of/anaesthetic canulas into his veins. At least now he's onto flexis, as long as no recurrence, those aren't needed...
Cheers,
Denby
Sorry I can't offer any assistance but just wanted to send love and hugs
Hope Mr D is feeling better today We have had experience of less than competent medical staff However they all seem to cover for each other Let's hope you see your angel in future
Hope your dental treatment went well
love
Wilbert
Hi Denby, sorry your husband had to go through this, hopefully today he is feeling a bit better.
I suspect the irritation on the outside could be the mitomycin that got on his skin.
When I was having mitomycin treatment I once forgot to wash myself right away after emptying my bladder and ended up with everything being very sore and red down below.
I found Sudocrem helped to calm things down a lot.
Best wishes Luce x
I've got some Sudocrem so will try that, though he says the irritation is easing now. We're both just exhausted from him being up in the night so very often. Thank heavens the double glazing fitter has been held up by the weather so didn't come today, prob Tuesday which gives me more time to be ready...Thank you all for your supportive comments, I really appreciate every one :)
