Any advice about how much walking Ray ( husband) should be doing each day?

He is Day 8 after his RC and quite keen to walk further than I'm happy with. Think he could easily overdo it but he does seem to be recovering quite well.

  • Hi JennyJJ,I have been wondering about this.I am finding walking very tiring but I think that might be due to being anaemic.I want to get back to full strength as I would usually be walking down to the care home to see my mother.I'm pleased to hear that your husband is recovering well.Love Jane XX

People keep saying take it slowly, gently but he walked from the ward to the shop at the entrance (about 20 minutes) on both Day 6 and 7 so it is now hard to guess what he should do. I'm anxious about him overdoing it but also about trying to hold him back.

  • Hi Jenny

The body has the ability to limit naturally what we do post RC. I just did laps round the ward then found the exit and wandered off but got lost!

At home I did circuits round the 8 houses in our cluster so I was never far from help if I keeled over. My initial triumph was the 100 metre limp to my barber to get 9 weeks of bed head cut off.

On my first big walk out, I went as far as I'd done there and back again. A neighbour spotted me sat on the kerb puffing and helped me home. But, I felt I'd achieved something.

My advice is: go little and often, build up distance gradually. My senior management says it's a bloke thing, we won't listen to sense, we push limits, keel over then has a day off.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.

  • I've just replied on Facebook - two short walks are better than one long one. They key is just to build up a little more each day, with plenty of rest in between. If he overdoes it one day, he'll pay for it the next. He'll probably be wanting to do other activities too, you just have to do what your body dictates.
