Hi folks. I posted a couple of months ago after an ultrasound showed a growth in my bladder. Fast forward a few weeks... went in for a cytoscopy at the start of August but turns out I have urethral stricture so the consultant couldn't insert the cytoscope! Told I'd need to have a general anaesthetic to enable urethral stretching (ouch!) and TURBT. Had the pre-op assessment then the CT scan. Got results through today - tumour looks to be contained with no sign of metastasis which is good I think. Other than lower pelvic pain I feel OK. Just waiting for an admission date which I'm told will be soon. Can anyone advise as to the recovery period from TURBT? What are the side effects of intravesical chemo? Will I need to be off work for more than a few days? Any and all advice gratefully received! Many thanks, Fiona x
Hi Fiona
We all react differently to the TURBT procedure but I would say you need to allow at least a week to recover assuming there are no post op complications or infections. Expect to see scab tissue in your urine for several weeks. You ought to be feeling normal again after a couple of weeks.
The intravesical chemo, most likely Mitomycin, has no side effects to my knowledge. They'll put it in later in the day after the TURBT and you'll need to hold it in for an hour or so then pee it out
Hope that helps.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
Hi Fiona,
As CB said everyone reacts differently to the TURBT procedure. When I had my first one it took me a couple of weeks to feel back to normal. Don’t forget the anaesthetic also has an effect on you and can make you feel very tired. The mitomycin ( chemo) is inserted via the catheter you will have in after the procedure and is painless, I had a slight stinging but nothing else.
It all depends when you go down to theatre and how you are afterwards as to whether you stay in overnight or not. I was first on the list for my first TURBT and was allowed to go home that night.
Wishing you all the best and hope you get a date soon.

My husband had Mitomycin over a number of weeks. He couldn't retain the heated version at all, the cold dose got harder and harder to retain with every week despite eventually getting an anti-spasm med called Solafenicin. He got fatigued for longer each week - [a day, a day-and-a-half, two days etc etc] after the Wednesday treatment. But we never missed a Tuesday looking after our toddler grandson, something to look forward to and take our minds off it all. If it hits you similarly, work wouldn't see much of you -we are retired. but it was all worth it, as the next cystoscopy was clear and biopsies clear. He's now back very much to normal and has a Flexi this Friday. First one of those since the beginning of this a year ago, as he too has strictures and everything since has been rigids under gen anaesthetic.
Alll the best and happy to answer any further questions,
Denby
Hello Fiona
I had my second TURBT on August 13th. I had spinal injection instead of normal anaesthetic. I had the procedure in the morning and after having chemo drip through my catheter for one hour which is painless drank tea and a couple of jugs of water managed to pee and was released at 6.00 pm. Tired the day after and slight stinging when having a pee but following day back to playing golf, normal appetite. I think if you get enough rest and try and follow your normal routines you will be fine.
Good luck, hope this helps

Hi Fiona
I was kicked out after my TURBT in 2 hours, compete with catheter. I was on a high and waving to everyone Im told. I had been on anticoagulants hence the catheter, as bleeding was a problem.
Recovery was reasonably quick but I would say minimum of one week rest, more depending on the type of job you have. I did feel tired for days but and was advised not to do anything strenuous for 4 weeks.
Best wish for s speedy recovery.
Hi Fiona,I agree with foxbrush in avoiding anything strenuous for at least 4 weeks afterwards.I had a bladder haemorrhage exactly a month after a Turbt procedure. It was very frightening and not something I would want to experience again.Luckily I was ok after a trip to hospital and a course of antibiotics. The urologist was very apologetic but it was partly my fault for overdoing it before I had recovered fully.Best wishes for a quick and pain free recovery.Jane
Thanks so much. I'll try to behave and take some time out....!!!
Many thanks Luce - all this very much helps to put my mind at rest!
