My husband is 4 weeks post op with a RC with Conuit Ilium. 1 week after the operation his bowel stopped working he was admitted again for a further week. He continues to have bowel issues. Has anyone experienced similar?

  • Hello VivB

Yes, my bowel failed to re-inflate post op. It took 2 weeks to do so during which time I remained in hospital. Once it did start it didn't stop for 15 days, still makes my eyes water just to think about it.

Your husband should be on a sloppy diet for a while and I found ice lollies the most appetizing as a change from the gooey food. He needs to drink a lot of fluid to keep his stools soft.

It takes several months for the bowel to heal and work properly but it is rarely the same afterwards. I still suffer from constipation and by contrast, some days the back door doesn't seem to want to shut properly.

If you have further concerns, just ask us here or contact his nurse specialist.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
