My Dad has been told they will send out a letter for an appointment to have a CT scan of the kidneys as it has been nearly a year since his initial T1G3 diagnosis. Is this normal? I didn’t think the kidneys were an area of interest as such especially if he is taking well to BCG. Has anyone else had this?
Hi . I have CT scans every year just as a check up. These are usually full body scans rather than focusing on anything in particular. Has your Dad had any tests recently that would indicate a problem with his kidneys? We tend to think the worst when we get these unexpected appointments, but they generally turn out to be precautionary follow ups. Best wishes
They already told him back in October when he was on his first course of BCG that he would have a CT after a year. I thought it would be of the bladder area. He’s never had any issues with his kidneys. Maybe they mean it’s a CT of bladder and kidney area.
It sounds like a normal check up. Usually before a scan, we would have a blood test. This checks the functioning of the kidneys to make sure they can handle the contrast dye. Best wishes.
I think it’s a CT urogram. A scan of the kidneys, bladder and urethra. I just read somewhere that some places recommend that yearly and others don’t. And yes you have to have a blood test before like you said. Really appreciate all the advice on here.
Hello wishingonastar
I'm with Rily on this one. After the main treatment, six monthly or annual blood tests and CT scans are normal to check kidney function.
Also, we get checked for tumour growth elsewhere for 5 years then, if nothing has cropped up, we get signed off.
If you are still concerned then have a word with the CNS.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.
Thanks for your reply. Sounds pretty normal to me then. Do either of you know when you get the results of the CT? Is it usually few weeks?
I have my now annual review with my consultant booked nearly a year in advance. However, about 6 weeks prior to that, I phone his admin assistant and then there's a scurry to book me a CT scan. Why the scan can't be booked early is a mystery. It takes a couple of weeks to get the results.

I always wonder why my annual check is with clinic before all the routine test results are back. I have bloods & chest X-ray on the day, then either ultrasound or renogram another day. I suppose they like to quiz me first in case there are new signs or symptoms that need investigating.
