Hello everyone
I lost my husband 6 months ago, 6 months after his diagnosis of advanced and aggressive bladder cancer. He had been experiencing urinary problems for many many months before the diagnosis was made.Â
His father also died of bladder cancer.Â
This is a cancer which is not high on the list of priorities for research and action.Â
I hope to do something about raising awareness of this disease in the hope of increasing the chance of early diagnosis which we all know can make a huge difference to the sufferer's chances of successful treatment.Â
Please could you tell me what in your experience  signs that something was not right with the urination and the urinary system, and how long before actual diagnosis those signs were noticed?Â
Thanks in anticipation for your help.Â

Hi Jayemee, so sorry to hear about your Husband , must have been a terrible shock. I was diagnosed in 2012 , after spotting Blood in my Urine. Went to Doctor same day and was referred for a Ultrasound and Cystoscopy . I had them 2 Weeks later , and they discovered a Tumor in my Bladder. 2 Weeks later I was operated on and the Tumor was Grade 3, PTA. Currently been treated with BCG due to a recurrence, which is highly likely with Bladder Cancer. I believe it is also the most expensive Cancer to Treat because of Checks and Recurrence. Good luck with your research , and anything you can do to increase awareness would be great. Domo x
Hello Jayemee and so sorry about your husband, sending hugs to you.
I was the same as Domo in every aspect apart from the recurrence, I've had 15 BCGs three years ago but had to stop as there was a shortage of it and by the time they got more in I had been waiting too long to carry on. I've not had a problem with been referred to urology and having a TURBT, my Dr said because of my age and I DID smoke he thought even at the time it was BC.Â
Best of luck with your research and great that your doing it. Sue Xx
Sadly, this is a familiar story. I recommend you look at the www.fightbladdercancer.co.uk website which raises awareness and fundraises for research etc. Better to work together & share resources rather than duplicate effort.
I had blood in urine detected but not followed up until 3 months later when I had what I thought was post menopausal vaginal bleeding. Seen at hosp within 2 weeks and got bladder cancer diagnosis. Was TaG3 & I chose bladder removal which I had a few months later. Now 6 years since diagnosis & all well.
My husband noticed  blood in his urine on one occasion  only. He had been doing some heavy lifting in the garden and thought  he had strained something.I insisted he went to see our gp When no infection  was found the Nice protocol swung into action and within days he was found to have bladder cancer .He had no other symptoms and other than blood in his urine following  procedures had no blood show again  I'm thankful  I persuaded him to visit our gp
I'm so sorry  for your loss this cancer is insidious and often it's advanced before symptoms show xx
Thanks Domo
I hope your treatment is successful. It's clear that immediate action when bleeding is first noticed is crucial but by that time the cancer can already be advanced as it was in my husband's case. One of the things I'm trying to find out is if anyone has noticed other signs prior to that.Â
Best wishes for your future health.Â
Jean
Hi Jayemee,
I'm so sorry to hear about your husband.
I was urinated more frequently & I never felt like I'd finished, a bit like cystitis except it wasn't painful. This had gone on for a month or more before I went to see the Dr. I left it this long as I wanted to see if it would clear up on it's own, plus I'm a bit of a hypochondriac anyway due to previously having breast cancer. I told the Dr I'd Googled & I had bladder cancer, she said I hadn't but put me in for tests immediately. Unfortunately, I didn't hear anything so went back to the Dr & she again referred me for urgent tests. I'd say from first symptoms to rigid cystoscopy took about 6 months. Since 2012 I've had recurring bladder cancer, G2p Ta TCC.
Hi Blanket, and thanks for responding to my request.Â
Your story again shows how important early action by the sufferer and rapid action by the doctors is. I'm sorry to hear you have on going problems.Â
Can we just ask whether you noticed any blood in the urine prior to your diagnosis?Â
Best wishes for your future

Hi Jayemee,
No, there was no blood at all in the urine.
