Hello can anyone help me I have been struggling to find travel insurance for the last three months without success. This is my first opportunity to have a week in the sun since my cancer returned in 2015 and my doctor and nurse both agree it's a good idea and support me in going.

In my ignorance I didn't anticipate any problems and contacted insurepink who I've used several times prior to 2015. After the lengthy questions I was told that because my cancer wasn't 'stable' they wouldnt insure me, this was based on my treatments being changed as scans showed small progression.

Since then I have tried several other 'cancer specialist' insurance companies and a broker who have either quoted my astronomical premiums or just refused me.

Apparently because I take Zomorph (50mg twice daily) this is seen as an increased risk? I am now panicking as I travel on Saturday 2/6/18 and am faced with the scary prospect of travelling without insurance. How do people with advanced cancer or on lots of pain relief manage to get insurance I really could use some advice.

  • Hi

I don't know which insurance companies you've tried other than Insurepink.

If you go the Travel insurance blogs you can see what other members have been talking about and their own experiences with travel insurance.

Another way of looking for information is to use the search bar near the top of the page to search for old threads covering what you're looking for.

These would provide you with a good starting point. You haven't said where you are going but if it's in Europe, Eurotunnel may be worth a look first. You don't have to be travelling with them to use their insurance and someone recently said that their only criteria is that your doctor has declared you fit to travel and your diagnosis is not terminal.

Please come back and let us know how you got on as it's always useful to know which companies are still providing decent cover at an acceptable cost.

I hope you can find something suitable so that you can continue with your holiday plans.

  • Try Mia. We took insurance with them for my daughter (terminal colon cancer) for a week in Spain. They’ll talk through everything with you on the phone but as long as you have your oncologist/dr blessing to travel will insure. We paid ÂŁ71 - didn’t have to claim but just having it for peace of mind was worth it.

Hope you have a great holiday.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for all your good advice and suggestions but since I was going away a couple of days after my post I didn't have time to follow up any more companies, I knew from previous experience that I would have to go through my extensive medical history which usually meant I had to be referred to the underwriters etc. which would've taken a few days.

Therefore I had no choice but to go without insurance and with just the EHIC card as backup and am pleased to report that I am now back home safely and in one piece but the anxiety of knowing I was travelling without insurance does mean there'll be no more overseas hols for me anymore.

  • Hi

I'm glad you got away on holiday and I hope you had a good time. However, it is a shame that you feel you can't go away anymore.

As you mentioned the EHIC card I presume that you usually holiday in Europe. If this is the case then Eurotunnel is frequently mentioned on here as a good provider of holiday insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions. I think their only criteria is that you are not classed as terminal and that your doctor has no objection to you going away.

    Best wishes

    Hi latchbrook

I got insurance from Eurotunnel last year, but have just tried again as it was great value, with no medical questions. Other now o my sell I strange to you if you are travelling with them. Thought this would be helopfull for people to know.

  • Hi

I think predictive text might have jumbled your message. Could I ask you to click on 'more' at the bottom of your post and then 'edit'  as you can then alter the jumbled letters.

    Hi latchbrook

Predictive text did go a bit mad!!!

it didn't give me the options you mentioned. No 'edit' option available!

  • It should give you those options  but, if not, could you type out what you meant to post again please.

    Thanks
