Hello, can I ask if anyone has managed to get insurance when you are terminal. My husband was given 6-12 months in July 24. He has prostrate cancer which has gone to his spine. When I was looking for a quote 2 insurance’s have said they can’t quote as my husband has passed his sell by date( as we like to call it) and we have to get a new date from the doctor or consultant !!! Which is impossible as no one knows. Rolling eyes

  • Hi HelenBruce, I haven't been in your position but if any will possibly be able to help is Insurewith

I strongly suggest that you speak with any Companies and not try online contact as you can explain better

I do hope you can do something and pleas come back to the forum or the number below for further support

    Take care both of you

  • Thank you I will have a look at the link

  • Hi

How did you get on with the recommendation that Kasvin gave you? If you were unable to get a quote from them you might want to have a look through the threads 'recommended travel insurance' and 'recommended travel insurance 2023-24', as you'll find lots of suggestions for travel insurance within them.

You might need to check what the travel insurers class as 'terminal' when you get quotes. You'll see in this reply by pollyalison to a previous post in this group that "some companies class 6 months as terminal and others 12 months but if you do not have a prognosis you are classed as incurable not terminal."

A former member posted here in a reply to another poster "If your husband is still receiving treatment, then he is not terminal. I am treatable but not curable but most certainly not terminal."

I hope you're able to get insurance and have some more holidays.

  • My husband was given 6-12 in July 24 but has gone pass that. There is no treatment. I haven’t  had time to check the link yet as he’s had a couple of bad days.
my problem is they want another time limit but no one can give that as he has done better then expected. Thank you for your reply

  • I'm sorry to hear that your husband has had a couple of bad days.

  • Did you manage toget cover?   I have been trying to get cover but I have been given a 6 month prognosis and I can't even get a quote.  They won't touch you if you haven't got 6 months from your return date!  It is so frustrating.

  • Have you tried Albert & Eddie? They're a comparison site, part of the group that owns Holidaysafe and Insurancewith, and might be worth a try. I'm insured with  them and they don't use the terminal word, instead they ask if you're incurable then if you expect to live more or less than 6 months.

I can answer more than 6 months so can get cover so I don't know whether they would cover you if you have to answer less than 6 months. Maybe an approach to your consultant to explain will persuade them to go on the plus side of 6 months to help you out?

Could be a long shot but worth a try? Obviously you do need to be honest with all the questions they ask.

  • No sorry we didn’t but I stopped looking as Bruce became too ill to travel.

  • Tried to get oncologist to up prognosis to 9 months but unfortunately they can"t.  I have one very outside chance with insure cancer but we are waiting on the reply to a questionaire sent to my oncologist.  Thanks for replying xxx

  • Well Insure Cancer gave me the knock back.  I was gutted but being like a dog with a bone I decided to try the Money Helper website.  They listed 20 companies that supposedly may be willing to cover under 6 month prognosis. I sent emails to all of them explaining my situation. Most of them immediately said that they couldn't help.  I ended up with 4 companies who went through medical screening and one by one they declined or tried to refer me to BIBA (This is the most frustrating part.  You are just going round in circles.  BIBA refer you to Money Helper.  When they can't help they then try to refer you back to BIBA!) Then lo and behold I had a breakthrough. I had given up all hope but I received a phone call from World First Travel Insurance. www.worldwideinsure.com  The representative took all the details of my Cancer diagnosis and said that she would pass it on to the assessors and I would have a reply within 24 hours.  I was still not hopeful but I received a phone call yesterday afternoon with a quote.  I was over the moon - so insurance accepted and cruise booked.  I hope this may help someone else in the same situation.
