I had oesophageal cancer 4 year which was treated by chemotherapy and an operation
In May 2025 it was discovered that it had spread to my lymph nodes. It was treated with chemotherapy and I am now undergoing immunotherapy,. The disease is terminal, but I have a life expectancy of at least 12 months
I contacted by phone the following companies and here is their responses. None would provide cancellation cover for the full cost of £20,000 and all involved phone calls over over 40 minutes
Nationwide Flex travel insurance does not cover terminal illness
Insurance with, would not provide cover for a terminal illness
All clear, Stay sure, and Albert and Eddie would give maximum cancellation cover of £5,000
Contacting brokers via the BIBA specialist service did not find any one who could provide cover at a reasonable price, the premium form one was the full cost of the holiday!
Holiday Safe provided £10,000 cancelation cover for just over £1,000
It is a long process but worth it.
Helen, is the £20,000 the cost of your trip or the total cost for you and a partner/friend/other?
I‘m asking because £20,000 sounds a lot for one person’s flight and accommodation. If there are, say, two of you you’ll need cover for both of you and each of you are likely to be covered for £20,000.
Hi
Am just trying for Insurance, my wife has incurable cancer bowel originated and now in the 12th rib, but we have not been told any timescale. So far, the best offer (out of three tried) was £8200 annual or £3600 single trip. A cruise up the Croatian coast. Was Holiday Safe your provider? Appreciate any advice. We are both in our early 80s.
Hello Dolos
Have you tried Albert & Eddie? They are a comparison site owned by the same company that also owns Insurancewith and Holiday Safe. I was able to secure cover through them despite having incurable prostate cancer.
Might be worth a try?
Derek.

Thanks so much. On it ASAP. Did they ask if you were terminal? I was asked if my wife was, when I said incurable surely meant terminal they wanted to know how many months/years and when I said we had not been told any figures, they wouldn't proceed any further.
Dolos,
A&E's proposal form asked me:
"Have you reached a point where the doctor says you cannot be cured, so treatment is intended to extend and/or improve the quality of your life?".
I answered yes because my consultant had told me that.
It then asked me:
"What is your short term outlook?" and gave 3 options to pick:
a) I am expected to live longer than six months
b) I am not expected to live longer than 6 months
c) I don't know
I was able to answer a) because my consultant also told me that. I guess if you answer b or c they probably won't quote. Unlike other insurers they didn't use the terminal word.
If you're not sure you can say "longer than 6 months" do check with your medical team to make sure you give the right info. and don't risk invalidating cover.
Good luck.
Derek.
