My wife has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer in September last year, she has had numerous scans and was supposed to have a Whipple procedure today the 3rd of February. Bile duct cancer is an aggressive cancer and so far she has had fast tracked treatment, however today the operation was cancelled with no reasons given and another date given for the 12th of February, we were both very distressed about this, my wife in particular, as she is going through this horrendous ordeal, my worry is, how many times can they cancel this, given the fact it is an aggressive cancer, I know many other people are going through these ordeals for other forms of cancer and illnesses, but this NHS problem is now a big big concern, I don’t even know what to say to my wife anymore as positivity has turned into worry and concern.

  • Hi and welcome to Carers. I'm sorry to hear what you're both going through. I would suggest, given how worrying it is for you, that it's worth contacting the hospital PALS (patient advice and liaison service); it's usually near the hospital entrance, or of course phone, and they are very good at helping to get things sorted; at the least they might be able to explain what's going on and why. I completely understand what you mean about 'worry and concern';  it's hard to stay upbeat when things seem to be stacked against you, but I'd really urge you to contact PALS tomorrow to get some help and information. Your wife should have her own designated specialist nurse who can also help with information and support, if not ask about that at PALS and it's worth contacting your GP, if your wife has not already been referred to Macmillan, and ask him/her to refer her, then you'll have another line of support.

I often mention looking for local cancer support groups here as it makes such a difference getting face to face support. You might like to see if there's a Maggies Centre  near you as they run courses that are brilliant at helping carers to cope with the emotional trauma of caring for a loved one with cancer. I hope you find something useful here.

    Thinking of you,
