Hope you don't mind me jumping in.

I was told the other day that if I took out critical illness now, it wouldn't cover the possibility of getting testicular cancer in my remaining testicle or any other future cancer types due to already receiving chemotherapy.

    Does this sound right Steve?

I'd agree that CI policies should rightly exclude TC in remaining testicle and TC appearing elsewhere (though arguably I think the exclusions should more appropriately refer to germ cell tumours as for many a recurrence isn't in the testicle as such).

These are simply situations were the insurance company won't want to cover the risk via a price increase and prefer to exclude.   I'm obviously affected too but I think this approach is entirely reasonable and understandable.  Ultimately, someone with a history of TC has a much greater risk of developing TC again when compared to someone without such a history.

In answer to your 2nd question.  Underwriting decisions must be evidence based.

I'm not convinced that offices can decline CI outright for someone with a history of TC with or without chemotherapy.  I can understand it in the early years (say first 3 years following completion of treatment).  Thereafter, I think you can legitimately expect to obtain CI cancer with a TC exclusion and a small extra premium to reflect the likely impact of non TC malignancies possibly associated with the chemotherapy.

I'll be expecting CI cover in the future for myself  with cover for cancer included (but not TC).

Happy to help anyone who has problems in this area.

I work in this area of insurance - all companies will pay out for a stage 1 seminoma.  It meets the ABI definition of cancer and companies offer at least this level of cover.

Any problems, please let me know if I can help.

oh really that's good to know. We were just confused as they said it depends on stage and grade. Insurance doesn't matter it any easier but it's a positive in a rubbish situation. Will keep you updated x

it paid out! I can't quite believe it

Hi all. Just revisiting this, as I've recently put in a claim on my CIC for Stage 1 pure seminoma, after a number of people suggested that it might be worth it. Has anyone had a recent experience on this matter, or have a professional opinion on whether I would / should be covered? I was reluctant to put in a claim to be honest, but was persuaded to, and am now feeling weirdly anxious about it, on top of everything else that you have to deal with from TC diagnosis. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of discussion about this topic.

Its basically saying if its left the testicular its classes as invasive. My other halfs had spread up the spermatic cord so did get a payout

Hi.  Sorry I’ve not been in the forum for some time …. I guess you get diagnosed and try to get on with your new normal life.  I’m almost 5 years post diagnosis now.

I work in this area.   Perhaps you’d like to chat offline - I’d be happy to help you any way I can.  However, I don’t think you need to be anxious about this particular matter!

Hi ScotSteve, my partner is having surgery today to remove he's testicle. We have been advised it is testicular cancer but have not been told what type at the moment. We have started a claim with L&G, do you know if this will pay out and how long does it take for them to confirm. Would be lovely to have some good news after going through this as a family.

Great news for you being 5 years clear Smiley

  • Hey Luckystar04, I'm going through the exact same, this coming Wednesday. How did it work out for you in the end with claim? I ask, as it sounds identical to me.

    Thank you.
