Just diagnosed

Hello, I’m new.. not sure what to say so thought I’d just relate what happened.

I went to a gastric specialist with a digestive problem, had a scan, then got sent to a different hospital where they did some sort of emergency operation straight away.

I woke up with a stoma and these two bullet hole shaped wounds.

It transpires that I have some sort of plaque like stomach cancer (stage 4) and that chemo starts in 6 days from now.

All a bit of a shock. Sometimes I don’t feel too bad mentally, sometimes I’m afraid. All the time the stoma, the wounds and my insides hurt.

All that I can live with I suppose, other than the fact that my wife is 12 weeks pregnant. I’m terribly worried for her in all this. She’s so brave but I am see it in her face how hard this is.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to manage things? We’re trying to keep it in the day but we both have our moments.

Thanks for reading.

  • Really sorry to hear your diagnosis.  It will be such a shock for you and your wife and a lot to get your head round. I have had cancer twice- stage 3 bowel cancer 14 years ago and stomach cancer three years ago.  The treatment options have greatly improved and once you have a pathway it will be clearer.  There are others in this group with a similar diagnosis who will be able to help.

There is also support from Macmillan and if you have a Maggie’s Centre near you , they provide really good support too.

    Take care and good luck!
