Hey everyone,

I'm new to the site and have to say I've found it really helpful.  I'm 33, female, and not diagnosed with anything but just starting out with some tests to see what's going on.  The internet is great for information, but I'm starting to freak myself out more than I already was.

About 3 months ago I noticed a hard lump on my upper-mid thigh (right leg). I noticed it while rubbing lotion on my skin. It is deep down IN my thigh, not up top on the skin's surface and isn't a dome above my skin or anything visible to the naked eye. I have to press down to feel it. It's hard like a marble and doesn't move around when I touch it. I know my body well and this was definitely very new. I decided to wait and see if it would go away, but it didn't.  Then, I started having a dull aching pain in that part of my thigh that comes and goes. In the last week it is happening more and now my right knee feels achy too which is odd because I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary.  I finally made an appointment with my PCP (who is also an internist) and saw her last Friday. On top of the lump, I have been feeling really off the last 2 weeks as well.  She examined me and flat out said she doesn't think it is a lipoma and asked me a lot of questions about the pain that started to occur and whether I thought the lump grew in size. I have tried to keep track of whether it grew, but definitely know it isn't get smaller. It MAY have gotten slightly larger, but not anything astronomical. It's the size of 1 or 2 peas. All one solid mass.

She is having me get an ultrasound (happening this Thursday) and she also did some blood tests. I'm meeting with her next Wednesday to go over the ultrasound and stuff since she will have the report them. She said the ultrasound will let us know if its a cyst or hard mass, and then we will go from there. She said it is "probably nothing" but needs to take a better look.

My father died of colon cancer a few years ago and my mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just this last Christmas. Naturally, I am worried about this being cancerous. I am getting married in 3 months and it is all a little nerve-racking. I know there are lots of benign tumors and cysts out there, but I can't help but be really anxious.

Should I be worried? Or am I getting anxious for no reason?

Sorry, but that is so wrong of your gp.  There really are a million and one things that your lump could be and sarcomas are VERY rare.

I received my referral for my biopsy today and it says potential sarcoma so am very worried right now

  • There is a big drive on sarcoma at the moment as they are so rare that they can be misdiagnosed and so delay treatment, as a consequence they have swung to a safer option of in in any doubt get it checked out. It it does turn out to be sarcoma this is good as you will get treatment earlier but until you get the diagnosis you will never be sure. It is easy of course for me to say try not to worry and I am sure you realise that worrying will get you nowhere but then we could all wish life were a little easier.

Fingers crossed for you, waiting at whatever stage of this journey is hard.

    <<hugs>>

MY referral said the same, it is to ensure you are fast tracked.  Yes, it is a potential sarcoma but it is also potentially and hopefully,  something else.  Keeping everything crossed for you and a good outcome.   Please keep us updated, these forums are invaluable.

Yes I Will, just very scared right now. The mass in my leg is very large and runs the length of my upper thigh. My knee is very painful but I will fight the fight

    Hello PT

I've been detailing my sarcoma journey in this group since this time last year. I injured my adductor muscle in the gym before Christmas 2016 and within 6 weeks I found a lump at the top of my adductor near the groin. It was already around 5-6cm and was giving me a lot of nagging pain. It took three visits to my GP to get referred, having initially been told it was hematoma from the injury and then a possible infection. Fast forward to March 2017 and an MRI indicated a suspected sarcoma which was growing rapidly. Sadly, the suspicion was confirmed when the biopsy indicated  Stage III Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (formerly known as MFH sarcoma)

I was referred to The Royal Marsden in London for treatment which after exhaustive scanning, bloods and screening I was recommended for PASART Stage 2 clinical trial for primary Sarcoma patients involving a daily dose of Pazopanib along with radiotherapy for five weeks. The drug is a protein blocker interrupting the blood supply and ability to flourish. This drug was, I believe, instrumental in my battle against sarcoma. Six weeks from starting the trial scans showed the tumour had shrunk and the final biopsy showed it was dying off.

In July last year the resection showed the tumour was all but perished. I had healthy margins and pathology report was positive. I am now undergoing three monthly checks and, so far, all would appear well.

I wish you well with your biopsy and pray that the results do not indicate sarcoma. If, however, it is sarcoma, then please feel free to contact me and this group with any questions you may have or just to chat. I am incredibly blessed to be alive and am one of a growing number of sarcoma survivors! So keep the faith, stay strong, stay positive and remember this site, and its members, is here to share in your plight and ease the journey.

Six months from surgery, I am doing well and disease-free (for now anyway). So let me say that it is highly UNLIKELY your problem is sarcoma. I am slowly returning to normal life and trying not to dwell on the likelihood of a secondary cancer appearing. I guess I will deal with that if and when it happens.  Please keep us updated on things and my very best to you....

Thanks for the positive words. It's a waiting game until Friday now for my biopsy. I have a strong network of things and family and I run my own personal training studio in my town so have alot of good people around me .

I will update as soon as I know my results

The first time I found my lump in my leg the GP referred me to get a scan and they all said it was a Baker's cyst, probably from a sports injury but no worries, it'll resolve on its own. After nearly 2 years of waiting and it getting a lot bigger I was finally referred for a biopsy and the lump turned out to be a high grade Myxoid Liposarcoma. Unlike some other people my lump was actually pretty soft and not hard. I don't know what would've happened if I didn't get sent for that biopsy, would've easily kept on ignoring it. I feel extremely lucky that I haven't had any metastases yet (especially after being there for so long!). Fortunately it was excised last year with negative margins. You need to absolutely push for your GP to refer you for further tests if you don't feel confident. Better to know and get the right treatment straight away in my opinion.

    Good luck.
