Advice please

Hi all, I’m after some advice please?
in October I noticed a small (2mm) hard lump in my thigh so I went to the Drs & she wasn’t concerned but said to keep an eye on it. By the end of November it had grown (5mm) & changed shape so I went back again. Still not overly concerned because it’s not golf ball size but I was advised to keep an eye on it weekly. So 2 weeks ago it had grown again (10mm) & the shape had changed again so I went back to the Drs. He was good & explained that most hospitals won’t scan me because it’s so small. I explained that I am worried because it’s growing & changing shape. He said it could be a cyst but it hasn’t got the characteristics of a cyst & he couldn’t tell if it was moveable or not? He referred me for an ultrasound.
Last week a bruise appeared & this bruise has got bigger & bigger. My lump is now sore whereas previously it was painless. I spoke to my Dr again who said he could be a haematoma, fused vein/artery or sarcoma. He said all we can do is wait for the ultrasound which has a 2 month waiting list on average & to try not to worry as they don’t usually take it seriously until it reaches golf ball size?

  • Hi

Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.

I am Steve, one of community champions and my experience of cancer is via my wife who has Leiomyosarcoma.

Looking at the pages here on sarcoma we can see under symptoms of sarcoma "bigger than 5cm (2in) – about the size of a golf ball" and that may well be what is guiding your GP. Sarcomas are quite rare whereas lumps are much more common though it is good your GP is aware and is trying to rule out the possibility that it might be a sarcoma.

Whatever you have taken the single most important step in talking to your GP, fingers crossed your ultrasound comes through before too long.

  • Thank you for your reply. I’m 45 and never had a lump before so it’s scared me.

  • I had a lump which I had examined three times by doctors over a nine month period I was eventually referred to the hospital. They treated the swelling by trying to remove it under local anaesthetic it was a sarcoma .

i would go private to have the swelling examined by ultrasound if it turns out to be nothing fine if it is a Sarcoma you will be referred immediately to a Sarcoma unit for treatment.

I fortunately have survived these failings for three years with no more tumours and have had superb treatment.

I would still recommend for peace of mind having private treatment to obtain a proper diagnosis

  • My first GP check didn't pick up my sarcoma as the GP had never seen one, this is common as Sarcomas are rare. They thought is may be a DVT.I would suggest you ask to be checked for a sarcoma, especially if you are experiencing pain. Also,Sarcomas grow quickly and tend to be hard, non malignant lumps tend to be soft.My second GP visit was to a different GP in the same practise who DID know about Sarcomas, she suggested I went to the east mids sarcoma clinic to be checked. It was indeed a fast growing Sarcoma, now treated and 20 months after surgery and radiotherapy,is fingers crossed, not showing any signs of returning.Best wishes whatever you decide to do.

  • Hi Chuckmonkey

    I was replying to EL2025

    You have replied to me.

Would you like to redirect to EL2025.

Delighted you have received excellent treatment and had your Sarcoma removed safely.

You are totally correct on General Practitioners they would perhaps see a Sarcoma once in 25 years . This of course is one of the big problems which I encountered you were fortunate in having someone in your practice who was experienced with Sarcoma.

    Wishing all the Best
