Elderly father spindle cell sarcoma - what to expect?

Hello,

My dad is in his 80s and has just been diagnosed with a high grade spindle cell sarcoma. Seedlings have also spread to other parts of his body. He is struggling with the use of his arm.

Getting treatment has been a real challenge with MRIs being rejected by hospitals after being referred over a month ago, and we don't really know what might be next in terms of treatment.

I suppose I feel a bit worried about what might be to come, as the doctors won't say we are looking at palliative care, but have also asked if all his paperwork is in order and said he could get referral for the Isabel hospice team for pain management. When I asked if this meant what I thought it did bringing in a hospice org they just said oh well just for pain management. I feel like I'm getting a lot of worrying messaging without anything being said explicitly.

With this in mind I feel uncertain about what's to come, can any one share their experiences if you are elderly yourself or have elderly relatives.?

Once diagnosed what was the treatment? How effective was it ?

  • Hi

I was diagnosed with an aggressive spindle cell Sarcoma tumour  at the age of 73 in my left arm. Once diagnosed I was referred to a Sarcoma Unit in Liverpool for it’s removal and follow up treatment of radiation. The tumour had not spread.

That was three years ago . I have had checks every three months which are the guidelines..

My first and obvious question is why have you not been referred to a Sarcoma Unit? The guidelines are quite clear for the treatment of Sarcoma that it is treated in a specialist centre?

I would go onto the Sarcoma UK site and request immediate advice from them on ongoing treatment for your father and what your father should be receiving in treatment as a matter of urgency.

    Best Regards

  • Thanks Roadrunner. Firstly, thank you for taking the time to reply. It's really a relief to hear about your own journey, and makes me feel hopeful.

We were referred to the sarcoma team mid December, but we still have no treatment plan and requests for MRI has been rejected twice.

The health care professionals have acknowledged that this hasn't been handled as efficiently as it needs to be but that doesn't help when it's growing every day.

I will get in touch with Sarcoma UK asap.
